Picked up my baby this afternoon after having her big service, tappet adjustment etc and a few other bits but nothing much, still costly though cos I had two new boots on the front also.

After leaving the dealer she sounded superb, back to normal and running beautifully, just as she should, big grin.

Anyway, after taking her for a long overdue run and the smile slowly fading, I noticed the tappets to be a bit noisy still. Now I've forgot what she sounded like before the tappets were making noise and I've got used to it being very noisy waiting for the service.

Can someone reassure me that they still sound a bit tappety even after the adjustments and they always sound a bit noisy? Could it be that she's ageing a bit and a few more miles under her belt?

She's running good though and performs well, great pick up etc..

Isn't it amazing that even when you're not 100% happy about something with your Cerbera, there's always incidents that make you feel proud and warm inside.

Pulled in for fuel and 4 youths came running over, phone cameras in hand and in awe of my baby, ignoring the Boxster and Audi TT filling up, very big smile and satisfaction

Then in the supermarket carpark, a manager and attendant coming over whilst I'm parked next to a 996 and opposite a spankers M3, amazed at the sound of my beast and how lovely she looked, apparently I could be heard from the far side checkout!!!

Love it.....

Naturally the early cars had the 'bag of nails' tappets, but I would have
thought your would be clear of this?

Know what you mean about the grin factor.
Leaving the last Mid Essex meet, TVRSLAG & I in high
speed convoy and saw a guy sprinting for all his
worth try to catch an image of us on his phone.

Mine is just 12 months old with 7500 miles on the clock. Had the tappets done at the last service, about 6 weeks ago, but it is still noisy on the tappets and, perhaps more worringly, pinks on full chat. Is this normal?

I wouldn't worry too much about it sounding tappety. Its better for it to sound slightly tappety, than not.

Agree with Kojak on the noisy tappetts thing, it's all to do with the early cams having lobes with little ramp on them, basically meaning that the valves don't get opened gently, they get whacked(better word needed!!!) open, which in turn causes the noise.

Later cars had softer cams with more lead, less noise and so I'm told less performance.

Mine has noisy cams in and I love it!!!!

Big T,

The car is probably fine (although without listening to it impossible to tell really).

When the tappets are done they add shim stacks to increase the clearance (if necessary) as the gaps only usually close up. The more clearance the more tapppety noises. I'd be more worried if the car suddenly became quiet.

Thanks for the reassurance and replies chaps.

I don't think there's a problem and Rob, that makes sense, so I won't worry about it.

What a pleasure to have her back running properly again. I can't wait for the weekend to take her for a good run, then again probably not looking at the weather forecast

Not clever enough to know if this is weird or not but wmy 4.2 Cerb was tappetty until I had a problem and had to disconnect the battery.

Now it seems less tappetty and timing is better. The only thing I can think of is a computer map reset that's happened as a result... but not being a boffin I would have no idea.

Could be entirely my imagination , but don't think so. Maybe coincidence?
