Hi, My car failed MOT yesterday, one of the problems was that the exhaust is blowing (hard to detect with the racket that comes out of them in the first place) but they didn't specify where from. It is a full stainless system so can i assume it will just be a clamp that needs renewing adjusting or can these systems become holed? Thanks for your advice with this as I am not of a technical persuasion (I bet you couldn;t tell!!)

Might be the manifolds. From what I've been told they do tend to crack. I think they are about 400 quid each side.
They can be welded sometimes with them still in place on the engine but if the cracks are hard to get to then they will have to come out (no small job depending if you are on early or late manifolds, apperently there are two different sizes).

Joolz was telling me all this the other day as mine need welded up at some point.

If you have a standard back box a common crack is the join between the exhaust tips and the baffling box.

Thanks for that, forgive my ignorance but can these cracks just be welded? I have had a good root around and the blowing if deff from somewhere near the back...its going in on weds but I would just like an idea then I don't get too much of a shock

I don't know about standard, I think they can assuming it's not soo bad.
If it's too bad to weld it might be just as cheap or cheaper to put a sports exhaust on it instead of a standard TVR exhaust.

Can you not use some of that exhaust bandage to get it through the mot and then fix it?

Yes they should be for life but they can crack on welded joints. Its quite an easy job to do (being a welder) can u locate the area its not the welding thats difficult its the access.

Barry,
My sports pipes seem to have suffered a similar fate some time in its past before i owned the car. The o/s/r box where the pipe enters into the silencer had obviously cracked. It has been welded and looks and sounds fine. I think that there is a U clamp where the pipes spread out (after they leave the prop tunnel), where you should be able to take the rear box off if this makes welding easier.

I've been unfortunate enough to have had the manifolds both crack but luckily they could weld them OK at very little cost.

Also had one of the exhaust tips fall off the other day. Heard the clonk and managed to retrieve it. Thought I nip into ATS and get them to weld it back on in exchange for some of the folding stuff but an hour later I heard a familiar clonk. Took it in to my usual garage and discovered that ATS had spot-welded it in three places so it would have been about as effective to use a wodge of bluetack! Arrgh, tucked up like a good 'un!

All's well that ends well, though, after a proper job its as good as new.

The exhaust manifold on my 4.2 Cerbera has separated completely at the weld just ahead of the catalyst on the driver's side. I'm going to have it replaced with a new item tomorrow, ahead of the MOT. Not cheap: £290 + 4 hours labour.

Thats what I'm worried about, If I can get mine welded then I'll get the headlight upgrade with the money I would have spent if I had to replace the manifolds.

Just to add my experience.....

Both of my exhausts manifolds were diagnosed as cracked, one was welded successfully the other need replacing. Seems to be a fairly common occurence.
