Window rattles
Discussion
I've read on various people's profiles that they've had windows that rattle and have had them fixed by dealers. Does anyone know exactly what causes the problem? My drivers door window rattles (just when closing the door) and I figured I may as well try to fix that whilst installing new speakers at the weekend. I've not been able to find any previous posts on this so I presume it's not a common problem?
thanks,
DJ

On mine it was the felt within the door, from what I remember the dealer saying... sounded like it was a fairly common problem.
I've got there brochure, as Focal's have been recommended before. There are 4 ranges in the brochure. Access, Polyglass, K2's and Utopia. Which ones are yours can I ask. I'm looking at thr bottom 2 in the range due to prices.(£130 and £210)
Also, are they the 'standard' ones, or are they the slim ones?
I'm off out now, be back in a cpl of hours.

I think they're the polyglass ones (they were a gift). I hope they're the slim ones as there isn't a massive amount of room in the Cerbie doors. When I had my last set they were around that price bracket (160 quid ish) but I think they've changed the way in which they classify them since. I believe there are sometimes a few on Ebay so you could save a few quid if you're lucky.

Excuse my ignorance, but where would one find felt in the doors (a diagram would help because I'm a bit fik with anything that doesn't involve a keyboard/mouse)!
Never had the door apart to see, but I'm guessing that the window's in runners at the bottom, and has a slight clearance within the door itself all the way up, hence needing at least a strip of felt/foam/whatever nearer the top (possibly on either side of the glass) to fill the clearance & stop the rattling? (And that there was probably some form of cushioning there originally that perished/fell out)
I would also guess that simply taking it apart & manually shaking the window to see what it's rattling against, then putting some form of cushioning on that would sort the problem (and is probably all anyone does??)
DJ,
If your rattle is the same as mine (was) it's probably to do with the guide inside the door that the glass slides up and down in. Open the door and you'll see a collection of 4mm allen key bolts that fasten the inner door to the outer door. Take them all out and then *gently* (so as not to trash your speaker and other wiring) remove the inner door. The offending window glass guide and the bolts that hold it in place are then clearly visible. Tighten then gently (so as not to strip the female thread in the door) and replace the inner door skin. Give the door a nice firm close and admire the nice solid, rattle-free clunk sound that it now makes!

Possibly. I'll have a look when I've got it in bits. The passenger window's fine so I should be able to see what's different.
DJ, I had a look at the invoice from when it was done last night, and it had "1x Frame felt" at about £13 down under the parts for it being fixed. Hope that's of some use...

I had a really rattly driver's door for ages - particularly when I closed it. The wing mirror used to shake as well and at high speed when I wound the window up the leading edge used to close on the outside of the door pillar, scraping the paintwork off the edge
I had the car resprayed recently and when they were doing it they discovered that the door was actually cracked in half along the seals (you could see it when you opened the door and looked at it end-on). They took it off, re-sealed and re-hung it and its perfect now.

I don't think mine's that drastic - no rattles/vibration from the door except when I close it. The plan is to take the outer skin off this weekend, dynomat it, tighten the bolts which hold on the window runners and check that the felt is in place and OK. It should be pretty easy to remedy judging by what everyone has said (thanks!).
