My fuel runs out when my fuel gauge is on 2/3. I assume it the sender as the dials are usually fairly accurate.

Anyone give me an idea of the resistance range of the dial just to check.

Anyone tried taking their sender out and know how easy/difficult the job is?

I can't help with your specific queries Julian, but I have an observation that you might investigate (in your usual, thorough way ) whilst you are fixing it.

I have noticed with my gauge that I get a (significantly) different reading having turned the ignition off and on again, even if I haven't used any more fuel. This apparent hysteresis effect is usually seen on a long journey. I fill the tank and drive so the gauge reading is constantly decreasing. When I stop at my destination and return to the car a little later, the gauge always reads less then at the end of the initial journey.

Anyone else seen this effect?

That might be a sticking float or possibly a low battery after startup which gets charged by the alternator after a long run.

Mine is odd too, because the gauge will slowly drop to the 2/3rds mark at which point I'll still have about 25 of the 65 litres left. Either an electrical problem with the sender or a problem with a sticking dial on the fuel gauge.

I suspect murphys law and that it will be a problem with the sender, but would like to know what I'm getting into first.

I don't think it is a low battery; the gauge never recovers to the level at the end of the initial journey even if I drive for a long run.

Sticking float is a distinct possibility, but its not sufficient a problem for me to want to investigate.

I'm glad it's not just mine then!!!
Exactly the same and no I'm not going to bother to investigate
