Could anyone enlighten me as to how the exhaust is secured? My left exhaust pipe is nolonger secure after an incident with a security post (which was laid on the ground). It looks like one of the brackets/exhaust clips have come loose but I cannot see exactly how it was secured previously.

Sorry - was stating the obvious a bit there! I blame the Soave. Feel free to drop me a mail - it's been a good week for old college/Uni people to get in touch!

Darren

From the manifolds where it is attached to the engine!!!! As far as I know the next hang point is a couple of rubber hangers around the silencer area.

I just bought 2 and they are only a couple of quid. I haven't tried to fit them yet but I hear they are a bit tricky and may result in a few sweary words while you are trying!!

Mine's still on the rubber hangers (as in the picture). However, I couldn't figure out what the U shaped brackets were for (as far as you can see in the picture). My left bracket is now loose (so you can move it up and down the pipe with your hands).

That one doesn't really help. On the first picture, you can see further under the car. The U shaped bracket that you can see under the car (where the pipes are parallel to each other) is loose on my car, though I can't figure out what it's there for (from a cursory look in the dark and the picture)

where the pipes close up as they go through the prop tunnel back towards the front of the car, the pipes pass above a protective plate..(a bit similar to that used on rally cars)...although is plate has cutouts so you can see everything...at the rear end of this plate there is a 'cotton reel' rubber that supports the pipes, although the pipes actually sit on this cotton reel which is bolted through the 'plate'...this cotten reel is more often than not, broken, and the pipes can be lifted up at this point....Im informed that the heat of the exhaust actually makes the bonding used on the cotton reel melts and one part becomes seperated from the other. This doesnt actually mean the exhaust hangs loose at this point however, as i said it sits onto the reel, but be aware of this "common" problem.
editted to say Kojacks first pic shows the cotten reel clearly!

From looking at the pictures I reckon:

1) One of the U clamps which presumably holds the backbox on is loose (I had hold of that yesterday in the dark and it spins around the pipe easily).
2) You can raise and lower the left hand exhaust by a few inches just by moving it with your hand. This shouldn't happen if the bar which is welded to both pipes is intact, so that's probably broken too.

Looks like it's a trip to the local garage then. I've got a load of the usual exhaust places near home but I doubt they'd be up for any welding...

check to see if all you have done is just to knock the exhaust clamp off where the tail pipes join the main centre pipes, as this will allow some movement on the rear box as well...might not need welding!

Thanks for that - I'll check, but 64p for a new clamp would be just too cheap for a Cerbie bill!

I will do - I keep meaning to book it back in with Joolz anyway for more niggles to be fixed prior to Le Mans so it'll get sorted one way or another.
Thanks for all your help!

Darren.

Managed to take a closer look today and it looks like I could be lucky and just have knocked the u clamp off. The only problem I've got now is getting a spanner to fit! I presume they're all 14mm? 1/2" is certainly too small and 9/16" too big!
