S-Max Fan running on
Discussion
Hello - Need some advice please.
Coming home tonight.....the S-Max TDCI 2.0Litre Diesel.....turned engine off as normal, but the fan didn't stop. We'd only been a couple of miles - so engine was not overheated. Aircon had been on for heating....but not excessively.
Left the car a couple of minutes - then went back out.....fan still running.
Looked at fuesbox - to pull fuse simply to stop it and see if it would reset.....Fuse buried in engine compartment and not easy to pull....when I did get plastic cover off - it is a bolted in type fuse (60 Amps).
I looked at the fan spinning happily......it has what looks like a small ECU (presumably a relay) attached to the side of the fan.....so I decided to disconnect battery to stop the fan as it had been running now for over 30 minutes and I didn't want either a flat battery or a ruined fan bearing !
Now with battery disconnected - I left it ten minutes then re-connected....fan kicked in straight away.....So I am now left with a couple of options whilst I do a bit more research.
1. Leave battery disconnected - wife and kids walk to school this week while I investigate !
2. Disconnect cabling from Fan relay (looks like some kind of ECU relay)....this might prevent car starting if car ECU checks for this fault?
3. Take out 60 Amp fuse and presumably fan will not work - but car will function otherwise
Any thoughts and advice?
Before I do any more investigation - I am thinking Fan relay fault or Coolant Temperature Sensor fault.....
Let me know your thoughts please......
Many Thanks,
Chris
