I've never really understood all the fuss about specific oils. The worst of today's oils are better than the best of those 20 or 30 years ago.

I agree. We run V10 F1 cars on the same 5W/30 Mobil you can buy off the shelf in Halfords! Good oil control, cooling and accurate management of its condition is way more important than what additive pack a decent synthetic oil of the right weight for the engine design contains.

Not quite so true of gearbox oils, etc, though....

The only engine I've ever put something special in is my supercharged Hayabusa engine in a car, but the gearbox shares the same oil as the engine and a cheap oil did make the top end sound slightly noisier than a better oil. The supercharger has its own oil supply and that was £60 a litre last time I bought some but Opieoils don't sell it.

I've noticed some peculiarities between different brands of oil regarding consumption and effects on mpg. For some reason Millers seems to control and improve both on my Evo, when compared to other brands in the same weight.

I can't adequately explain why this should be, but it would appear I'm not the only one who has this viewpoint, it was discussed at some length on another forum.

However, Millers products used in the gearbox of the same car produced an appallingly obstructive and notchy change when compared to the equivalent Redline oil.
