Anyone know anything about Audi rear axles?

Last weekend I picked up a job lot of parts from an a 4x4 workshop, the parts were from an Ultra4 off road race car project. The project had been abandoned and I bought the parts as the project is similar to what I'm planning.
Among the parts were five rear axles from Audi Quatros. I don't know much about their source except that the long ones are from an S2 Avant, and the short ones from a 100 Avant. They have locking diffs built in, are narrow and strong making them good for independent suspension off road use.
The engineer told me that the short ones are difficult to obtain but are the stronger ones. Apparently they are used in amateur motorsports, making them difficult to find. They planned to use the short ones at the rear where strength is needed and the longer weaker ones at the front. That way they had spare diffs if they broke. I don't see why the rear diff takes more abuse in a permanent 4x4 car though.
What I'd like to know is what years and models these diffs are fitted to. And are the short ones really that desirable and difficult to obtain? One of the short ones has a different gear ratio which might explain why there are three of the long diffs in the set, to swap the ratios over with one of the short ones maybe.

As you've said the longer ones could be from an S2 avant, but they could also be from an S4 or S6 avant, C4 shape, or indeed any C4 Quattro avant. The shorter ones are probably from an S2 coupe, but again these are the same as the 2.3 20v coupe. Not heard anything about short ones being stronger, they're all pretty strong, you've got to be giving a highly tuned S2 some welly off the line to break them.
