Nissan Qashqai 1.2 timing chain 2016
Discussion
Guys a workmate has a problem, the car lost power and stopped dead but a mechanic got it going again and it ran ok for a few miles then stopped again.
It’s £700 to fix apparently but I’m worried if it’s got further damage and it’s £700 wasted.
If it was revived after breaking down how bad can it be and is £700 about right ?

Yeah a catastrophic engine failure doesn t go again for several miles that s why I m on here asking. I can t see how it s a new engine
I am assuming you didn't read this post then?stevemcs said:
If it s jumped a tooth then other than stripping it and putting the timing right I don t see how they can get it too run before it reverts to running poorly again. These also have the habit of cooking themselves, seizing up but will then run once cooled down.

Yup, on my "won't touch with a bargepole" list along with the Ford Ecoboost, Stellantis Puretech and JLR Ingenium. The one we had literally locked itself up when warm, it would start from cold but get some heat in and it started to seize, timing is fixed, it’s either out or it isn’t, usually with a cam/crank correlation.
Genuine engines are reasonable, but it’s still around £7000 for a genuine one fitted.

The amount of cars with this engine you see for sale on eBay with "new timing chain just fitted" is scary. You know the owner had a major engine issue, had a new chain fitted at great expensive and the thing has yet more problems such as burning oil and still doesn't run properly.
They then just want rid of the damn thing.

Following this. A friend has the same car and does only local trips. Her first longer trip 50 miles the oil low pressure light came on just at the end of it. She parked up and bought oil and the car took 2 litres.
Drove home fine but 6 weeks later the car took another 1.5 litres. No obvious leaks under the car.
