When Mag's go bad

I thought I would post the picks of my wheels before they were painted. I got these wheels from AUS at the end of last summer. I cleaned them every 2 weeks and they got steadily worse over the winter. When they were refurbished Colin and Kustom Kolours said a light rub with wet and dry and all the lacquer came off! I belive the lacquer is not goo enough for the UK.

Yeah, got the problem with my mag wheels on the commodore as well... don't know what there is on the UK roads that causes paint to flake... not good..

The paint (fingers crossed) is OK on my VXR, but the laqcuer is flaking really badly.

Is flaking lacquer terminal or can it be sorted? By me or a professional?

a lot of wheel companies dont use an etch primer even if painted silver (as opposed to clear laquer) and as neither clear lacquer or normal paint will stick to ally, it's a disaster. I think it's worse in the UK because of all the salt etc we put on the roads in winter. It only takes a tiny chip in the lacquer for it to lift off large areas. Last set my dad refurbed you could literally peel off huge areas in sheets.

If you can get hold of some, get them etch primed with aircraft primer, really makes a huge difference. Only downside is you have to have silver paint as opposed to clear lacquer (unless you fancy having lime green wheels!!)

I have given up on refurbishing alloys with laquer decay, I now use emery paper & an artist material called Goldfinger which you can get in silver, it is a metal paste that will blend in with original colour and give the appearance of perfect condition, needs redoing when you clean them, downside is that they do not protect them from salt, upside is they look good and cost very little to maintain, can even go over brake dust pitting if you don't have time to clean thoroughly, cheapskate I know...

Yep, my Noble wheels had probs with stuff getting under the lacquer and the same has happened to th18" mock split rims on the work Mondeo. Seems to be a common fault not just Aussie related?

I had a talk with the supplier of the wheels last night and ROH have not offered an explanation or compensation. I picked ROH because they are the manufacture of the HSV wheels I took off. The only thing I can say is don’t get lacquered wheels from AUS as they won’t last too long in the UK. In my opinion the lacquer is too thin. I had a set of aftermarket wheels on my last car of a similar dish design. They lasted much longer but they were made in Germany.
