I had a bit of a run with one of these a few days on the dual carriageways heading up to Cadwell park. It was a '51' plate, red pick up truck with a 5.7 V8 badge. It looked very cool I would have to say . The UK should have more proper pick-ups, not those silly Mitsubishi things.

Is the 5.7 the Corvette V8? How much bhp does it make? The front of it looked like a Monaro.

I was really rather surprised, on the occasions where he floored it, that my old high revving Merc was keeping up okay, although I really had to work very hard for it and use every last rev! I think he would have left me behind with a long enough stretch though.

In essence, it's a Holden Commodore with the back end cut apart (oh boy, I'm sure I'm gonna get into trouble for that comment)

Yes you are correct in that it has the same engine as the Corvette - Gen III LS1 5.7 V8

In standard trim, this push out approximately 350-375 BHP but the Maloo is a very light car compared to most normal saloons so it will "get up" extremely quickly.

If you managed to keep up, then I guess he was still running in 3rd gear

Technically they are HSV Maloo's.
The Holden version which now also comes with a 6litre engine (slightly different to the HSV/VXR engine) is a Holden Commodore SS Ute.
The Utes also come in a smaller V6 version.
Here are a few piccies from www.carsales.com.au

It's not Des as his is an 04 plate.

Are you sure it was a HSV Maloo and not a Holden Ute?

There are a couple of Red 51 plate Holden Utes in Gloucestershire/Worcestershire/Herefordshire area.
One is an SS Ute and one is V6.

Cheers, Eric

Hi... well it looked very nice and I was working extremely hard behind you there - I bet for you it was effortless

Some louder exhausts would make it even better - unfortunately I couldn't even hear it!

Either after or before following you I followed a lovely Lotus Carlton for a good few miles - great stuff!

I got 25,000 out of my fronts including 45 laps of Bedford Gt circuit Dunlop Sport 9000's - been very impressed with them.

had Bridgstone and Pirelli Potenza's/P0's etc on Subarus in the past and they got eaten for breakfast. Good grip with Pirellis though

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 my choice. Dont mix them, put 4 on.
