The factory steering control has now been replaced with a PAC SWI kit. Basically the steering switches now control the stereo via an infra red transmitter located just forward of the interior roof light rather than a direct wire connection.
It's not as responsive as the factory wiring, usually because the gear lever can get in the way of the signal and Kenwood have put the sensor on the HU a bit too far down. Has it's good days and bad days. The kit costs about £55.00 and there are various locations that you can place the transmitter.
I wasn't going to bother, but having switches on the steering wheel that did nothing would really bug me.
The company who fitted it have more of an idea of fitting things to Monaro's than me. Can't find the details at the mo, but if you want their number, then let me know as they are local to us in this neck of the woods.
