Ok, so i have been told a few different things about which oil to use, but im flicking through my manual (please bear with me, im a newbie round here ) and it mentions using grade 20w/50 or 15w/40 for prologned snow use.

now i know some guys on here use 5w40, im all confused....

And when i picked the car up i was told 10,000 miles is fine for the service, but it should really be about every 5-6,000 (miles) according to the manual, what do people on here do?

FYI i drive a gts

Is down to personal choice.....think factory fill on 6.0 is 5w-30. I use 5w-30 and have never had a prob.

Do you change more often than the 10k service interval? I did every 5k in the Omega as the oil looked dirty after that period but Jag service said I was wasting my money when I had the S type. How do the Monaros fair if left until each service int.?

Jeff.

To be honest rarely done more than 10k in one car. I tend to run the std oil until it has coloured up a little, 2-3k then change to redline 5-30(again personal choice but it is expensive). If I kept longer i would change every 6k as that equates to 10k (kilometers) which is service interval in Oz. The 6.0 cars have an oil life indicator as well which can come on before the service light. We see plenty of cars that get serviced on 10k miles and they are all A1 for it.

Thanks Caspy, I'll change mine every 6k too then. Cheap maintenance really. I noticed that the Oz ones were 10 kilometers, I suppose it was an easy change when producing the UK manual - a km to mls. !!

I think if the service intervals were for 6k miles it would put a lot of people off. Evos and such like need such pampering but you tend to expect that from a turbo charged nutter car.

Richard.

it seems that 10,000 miles is fine for the car, especially in our more "temperate" climate, but that 5-6000 is still good if you want to mother your car, which most of us do.

An early service cant do any harm

I put Redline oil in mines first 10000 mile service bout 2 months past, was expensive but going to do it every 5 - 6000 now, oil and filters, probably do good oil in the gearbox as well seeing as i accidently had a rip shifter fitted and probably the diff oil as well. Service light came on again just 2 weeks ago, turned it off, i'll decide when it needs it a service not the car!

I use Millers CFS 5W 40 which I have found to be very good in a number of 'big power' cars up to 500 BHP, CFS 10W 60 in V8 cars with 'over 500 BHP'. Posted before but was asked by Monkfish + Wortec which oil I used as they had never heard such a quiet LS1! It is genuinely better than all mentioned here in my experience.

I agree with Redline choice for gearbox, good stuff. Redline not as good as Millers CFS engine oil though.

No problems using Valvoline Synpower for 5 years on modded & supercharged HSV's. Also my mates garage use only Valvoline, so it was cheap & meant that with the exception of my Smart, all my cars ran on the same oil, which was less hassle.
I suspect that all quality brands are actually very good, It's more important to change the oil/filter regulary (every 6k miles in my case) than which brand you use.

If you find that your oil gets dirty pretty quick, you might want to check your air cleaner. I know after the winter months my filter didn't take long to build up with dust and road grime.

Just for peoples info: The number at the front ie . 5W-30W, the 5 is when the oil is cold, and as the engine heats up it the oil thickens. So when it is at operating temperature the oil is thicker. Would be a little concerned over 40W, as think that might get a little too thick for the engine, and not get quickly into places it needs to be due to it now being thicker.

Yeah factory recommended is 10/30 lots of info on ls1.com for those seeking information overload. Mobile1 seems to be a favourite.
