Ok, tested a theory with the Commodore today. Apparently only the Police can give you a ticket for parking on Double lines, and not the parking inspectors, atleast up here in Newcastle. The theory was proven correct today. Here they have £15 parking per day, (racked up quiet a few of these), so thought would see how long it would take to get the police to give me a ticket. 2 Weeks later, after the experiment started, I got my first ticket from the Police. Anyhow, no question at all about the QLD plates! Anyhow, dude said, he liked the car and had I turned up earlier before he had written the ticket, he would have just asked me to move it. Anyhow, essentially the same really... whether or not he had written it, as long as the police don't talk to the council I am sweet. (council know where the car lives - buggar), got a bunch of little brown envelopes the other day. Police fine = £30, parking charges saved = £135 over two week period. SWEEET..

I seriously wouldn't try that in London...anywhere in London.

You wont just get a ticket, the car will be towed & impounded...particularly if it's somewhere like Westminster or the West End.

What a great idea. Lets all park on double yellow lines and completely block the roads up.

Have you ever considered why the yellow lines are there in the first place? i.e parking on them causes an obstruction, affects visibility, pedestrian safety etc etc?

Highly selfish IMO.

I think some of them are plain stupid, yellows in a laybye for instance. Revenue springs to mind. Nottingham is a sealed up town. It's either yellows or pay and display, funny that now we have a tram system to fund!

I dont understand this, if its a "Layby" it cant have a parking restriction? maybe its not deemed to be a layby, can you elaborate a little on this out of interest?

Yes, there's a layby in front of the local county court. It's like a pick up/drop off point. So, it's out of the way of the traffic flow. Eventually they put down double yellows which are unbarred at the end. The yellows become a single dotted yellow as it crosses an alleyway before becoming a double yellow again. The signage is nonsense but they've made lots of money from it. Nottingham is completely stitched up as far as parking revenue is concerned. You pay for every available inch. I've seen yellow lines 12 ft long!

I suspect being in fromt of the court, it was a parking place, but is now as you described, a pick up drop off poing, which you can do on double yellows.

Without the bars, it is, or is supposdly, un-enforcable, according to a prog on telly last year. We have one the same in Aberdeen outside the council offices, saves people stopping on the road, blocking it, whilst people get in and out.

Not that stupid really, wouldn't do it if it caused an obstruction, affect visibility, or pedestrian saftey. They are there cause the council want to make £15 out of you, definitely not there in the interest of safety or anything where I am parking. Other double lines yes, but not where I am parking, even Mr Policeman said it was fine where it was parked and he couldn't understand why there were double lines there.

Mate, wouldn't park anywhere on a double line if it did cause a possible risk of life, or danger to anyone.

I got a ticket there once, fought it and eventually went to appeal with photographs. The adjudictor 'held' for the council because 'they had made an effort' with their signage so unbarred lines don't guarantee a win. Not here anyway!

Ok may be I jumped to conclusions. I a bit biased on this subject as my driveway leads out to a road with double yellow lines. There's a restaurant nearby and I constantly get people parking either side of the driveway entrance making getting in and out of it dangerous. Highly inconsiderate and they must be real lazy buggers as there is a car park (free in the evenings) 50 yards up the road!

Yeah, generally not in the business to piss people off. I save that for my neighbours, mind you not there any more, and the street I am in now, love the two cars, of course the black one is their favourite. Wouldn't park on double lines if it was going to be a pain for anyone, cause definitely don't want to risk my car getting damaged in any way.
