Hi All,

About to become owner of cv8 (march 05 ).

Like the forum, couple of (possibly) dumb and already answered questions
Are the brakes really as bad as everyone says ?

Are there many alternatives to all out racing brakes ?

It concerns me slightly as i enjoy a poweful car, but also enjoy the stopping !

Look forward to your thoughts

Welcome

Yes the brakes are as bad as all say sorry. Alternatives are VXR brakes with high friction pads or AP Racing. Contact Monkfish Performance who will sort you out www.monkfishperformance.com

Welcome to the club!!!

PS

Have driven an 05 on std brakes again this morning. In normality they work and stop you well, but only once or twice in quick succession. They fade hugely and fairly quickly as soon as any heat builds through the system.

......

but you will love the car.

PS

If you want a set of used 05 VXR brakes, email me and make offer!!!!

the brakes are fine for normal road use, mine did several concurrent laps of the nurburgring before starting to smoke or fade badly - bear in mind this equates to 600 odd corners and speeds over 130 and you realise that standard road use isnt going to be a major problem.

there is only so much breaking the tyres will allow, which the standard breaks are more than capable of. The upgrade is focused around larger disks and pads to disperse the heat for repeated heavy breaking during very hard road use (through loads of bends) or track use.

No, the brakes aren't as bad as many make out, I did a trackday at Bedford in mine and had no fading issues at all...wasn't hanging around either - ask MalcN.
I don't suppose I would have been able to outbrake his car (he has AP's) but I don't really have that sort of competitive streak in me.

I'm sure that AP's a good upgrade but then so would losing 3-400kg's from the cars overall weight etc.
I genuinely wonder if many folk get their moneys worth from such an upgrade - I probably wouldn't.

Don't be fooled into thinking that your new car will have the braking power of a bicycle but, if it floats your boat then make it so.
They look good as well btw...perhaps that's a driving force for many, I dunno.

Nige, try it & see. I believe you'll be amazed at the difference AP brakes make. The ability to be able to brake much later & with confidence transforms your driving. Could also prevent an accident, I've had AP's on two cars, both of which I had to perform "emergency" braking on the motorway in. Both times I really think I'd have crashed if it wasn't for the AP's.
Now LSV are virtually giving them away, there's no excuse.

£2500 worth of uncertainty about the benefits to me is quite a bit of excuse.

When they actually start giving them away...then there's "no excuse"

Perhaps rather than spending the money on the brakes then I should just get my backside out of the drivers seat and develop a remote controlled setup

Edited to add: Ooops - and welcome Daz

Now £2085. fully inc. & fitted @ LSV. Beg, borrow or steal.
I was happy to spend over £4k for the same package & thought that ultimately it was the best mod. I had on my HSV.
Blimey, anyone would think I worked for AP, I don't, but I think everyone who has fitted them will agree with me.

Can the ap's stop you faster. Surely standard brakes are just as capable of pushing the tyres to the limit of adhesion and kicking off abs.

My belief was the AP's provide the benefit of increased surface area for improved cooling = better performance over continued heavy use?

Or am I wrong?

Well I'm no "techy", but it certainly felt to me as if I stopped much quicker with AP's.
If they didn't, then I guess there would be be no point in HSV & all the other marques & racing teams using AP or similar braking systems.
You're right about fading, but to be honest 99% of the time with the HSV (Harrop) set up I didn't get fade on the road anyway.
All I can say is try them & see!

The old brakes on my '04 CV8 used to fade during a single heavy braking manoeuvre, they were that bad. I now have APs and they are worth every penny of the £2600 I spent on them to know that I can stop reliably from speed. Now that they're even cheaper it's a no-brainer.
