I had an exhaust fitted in March this year when the removable centre boxes for an 04 model was not an option.

The good news for anyone else in the same position is that Yesterday I took the car to a company who make one off stainless steel exhausts (found then in Yellow pages).
They removed the centre boxes (can easily be put back in again) and fitted a couple of pieces of 2.5" stainless pipe for £60.

Now i'm expecting an ASBO in the post any day soon.

Warning:- you may find that driving round with the window open listening to the exhaust on 'overrun' may damage you fuel consumption figure.

Hmm, I was wondering about that. Mine is the 05 and it was fitted in October last year.

I was afraid of upsetting the tuning etc. We have a really good custom stainless steel exhaust maker locally in Anglesey and provided that he could re-work the pipes so that I could have the centre boxes re-fitted whenever would be fantastic. Also work and travelling to Monkfish to have the work done is bit of a problem at the moment.

Has Paul from WORTEC got anything to add on this?

Removing the centre box's will be no problem on the "tune" front..... and as you have found out there are a few good exhaust places about to do the work......

We have been looking at offering an upgrade price from origional 04 to new 04 systems but as there are no common parts it will cost arround £500 (if we P/X the old system) which we felt was to much......(we could be wrong??)

As for the sound it is slightly deeper than the new 04 system if you take out the box's but it still sounds cool and at £80 I would do it

The over-run is brilliant isn't it?

Little trick I found if you slightly blip the throttle after the burbling has stopped then it's possible to make it burble again...and it often burbles for a lot longer.

How childish is that!?

Paul (WORTEC1),

Did you look into the costing of ugrading the original 05 systems? Also have to admit that the tail pipes on the upgraded system look better than the ones I have.

Thanks

The tips would be of interest please.

The centre boxes will have to be a local thing, provided as you say, it won't muck the tuning up!

The p/x for the new system is out of the question at the mo as I'm trying to save up for the headers and I'm nearly there!

Just out of interest, are the old 05 and new 05 systems really that different in design?

The strange thing is that the centre boxes are straight through, and whilst being quieter seem to act like resonance 'filters'

True/false???

lots of the 993 porsche owners take their exhaust silencers to bits (physically cut into the box) - remove some of the packing and then weld back together - this is the hard bit. (search for RSR exhausts on the net - there are lots of lovely pictures on p-car i think?)

cheap and easy to do - makes lovely noise on 993 - but no power gains.

just trying to get the right amount of noise / resonance levels is the hard bit ;-)

I had that done on my new Griff 500 a few years back and it sounded superb.

A word of warning though is that 3 or 4 head it and got their Griff done as a result. One for some reason ended up unrepairably and earshatteringly loud, one lost a bit of power and one was fine - so get it done properly and bear in mind there is no way back.

Anything further on the tips yet Paul?

I may go over to Anglesey tomorrow and get the guy to look at the system and see what he may be able to do.

BTW are the tips easy to change?

The tips must be easy to change as all this started when one of the tips on mine came loose.
Just needed spot welding - took the guy about a couple of mins to take it off, clean it up, re-spot weld it back on!
