Key ran out of power today - totally without warning. Was at home so just had to find the spare.

Went to the local vauxhall (non Monaro specialist) who were great but found that the previous owner of the car (a certain dealership near Heathrow *name removed*) had the key superglued together including the battery.

So now I need a new key which is £35 plus programming at £35 an hour.

Anyone had this happen to them? Can I get the key posted to me? Do I need the car there? Why is there absolutly no warning (perhaps the battery should be replaced every other service?). Why does a vauxhall Monaro specialist superglue a bl**dy key together!?

Sorry but this is not strictly an answer to your question but do the UK spec Monaros have the little plug key type override in the glove compartment like the HSV's?

This is for just such an occasion as yours where you need to start the car and the batt is flat in the key and not sending the code to the immobiliser.

Did you buy the car from the dealer? If so, I would go back and say that they have caused the problem and surely they should fix it.

the key fob is a sealed unit so you can't change the battery.......maybe that is why it is glued together.

The service details say it should last 5 years........

I think you will find you answered your own question!

Speak to them though, I am pretty sure I know which dealer you are talking about and I complained to them about my wheels a few months after I bought it. They had refurbished them and done a very cowboy job on them. After my complaint I got a cheque for £400 to get them refurbished properly.

Believe it or not the actial battery itself is superglued inside. Same battery as any other vauxhall and the technicions were amazed to see it in that state.

Think you are right to send off a letter of complaint as it really is a ridiculous thing to find.

Still, least I was at home within distance of the spare.......

You may well be right although IMHO a very stupid design if true. Am waiting to find out from Vauxhall although the present belief is that the key is for 'life'. Two years is not life to me............ And they come in two's only......

This is from the Holden service manual.....

NOTE 3:
The remote control key is a sealed for life unit (non
removable battery), therefore the housing cannot
be separated. The battery life expectancy is
approximately five to ten years.

so ask for a new key!!!!

Same thing happened to me, only I was in France! Very luckly my spare was in my suitcase and the suitcase was in the hotel and not the car! So I just had to leave the alarm going and go fetch it.
I'm making the trip down Derby next week for a service, so I'll take it with and let you know what they say!
5 years my ass!

BTW: Other than that, had an amazing 3000 mile trip round europe and the car was a dream, especialy round the Nurburgring!

if the battery fails open the car with the key (alarm will go off) then put key in ignition and turn on and the alarm will stop.......

Plenty on ebay if you dont want to pay £35, but you will still need it programmed of course.

If its 5-10 years then its a warrenty issue IMO. Trouble is if its happened to me is it a one off or is everyone else going to find their key fobs failing.

Least I now know the key will do the override - thanks for that Never wanted to chance it blasting the neighbourhood!

On the HSV i just ordered the key head from Oz, screwed the key blade in, turned the ignition on once ( this programs the head from the ECU) and on the second turn she started..!!

I'm sure this will be the same for VX models..?? scratchchin

The guys at Picador have ordered me a new key. They are going to claim it as a warrenty issue as it does say 5 yrs plus.

I think Vauxhall have no choice on this - will keep updated once its done.

Even the VX dealer couldn’t work out how to program my 2000 HSV GTS key head, it was only after I contacted Oz dealer that I did the “ self program” and I was amazed it worked, I think you have to make the silver ball bit on the key head touch the ignition housing when turning the key the first time!!
If the monaro's have the silver ball bit on the key head it will do the same as the commodore's ?

Well that's a right shame as they charged me £75.00 for the pleasure of replacing it.

And my current key only unlocks the drivers door - are there two keys that do different things? Should I be concerned??

you should have one key for the ignition and drivers door and one for the glove box........

Let me rephrase that - the key fob remote only unlocks the drivers door, not the passengers. The old key did both.
