Monaro for sub £13k.

Just had this £12,995, 52k miles Monaro pointed out to me by a friend. Despite the mileage, which is nothing for the LS1 anyway, I'm fairly shocked that a 2yr old Monaro can now be brought for maybe as low as £12k. When you consider the wonderful press that these cars have had & the "bangs for bucks" they provide, I didn't anticipate such rapid depreciation.
Is this just down to badge snobbery or is the threat of huge tax increases for "gas guzzlers" worrying buyers? Probably both I guess.

I suspect it's the V8 that worries people. The capacity makes people cry before they even know the facts. Before it went I could get 26mpg out of my 5.7.
Mind you, then I put a RipShifter in it, had a mild tune and took it to a few trackdays. 4mpg was a bit of a shocker!
As everyone says, almost worth buying to play with.. HSV Touring car replica anyone?

aaaagh, but you can tune the hell out of the 5.7. You should see what they come up with in Oz. Drove a CAPA car last year that put out 650bhp.. couldn't put the power down in any way sensibly, but then it wasn't a sensible car.
And they reckoned that was a mild tune. I would be tempted to do a street sleeper and try and tone it down all the way while having some monstrous mechanicals. Matt black. Slot mags. I am a child in a man's body...

yer, guess so. If we did it properly I want it to look like a Hot Wheels from 1976...
Would there be any problem with cooling a monster engine (say a twin-turbo) if you kept standard bodywork? A shaker hood kinda spoils the idea of keeping it looking stock (ish)...
Pro-street Monaro trying not to look Pro-street. Mmmmmm....

Not sure about additional air intake for turbo's, but the standard body kit should be fine for some serious supercharging.
The standard CV8 is fairly tame looking, so it would make a great Q car.
In the early days of owning HSV's only a few Petrol Heads or Aussies knew what they were. I was often tempted to fit a set of Vauxhall Omega badges, preferably from the 2.5 diesel :-)
The plan being to dawdle in the fast lane at 70mph infront of a 911 or similar for a while then press the throttle! Without doubt a child in a man's body.
Yeah, but there should still be enough people out there who know their muscle to keep 'em afloat a bit more than 12k? I'm not complaining.. it might allow me to get one again. At these kind of prices it's not far off being able to get one as a weekender. I ran my HSV as a daily driver (1000miles a week), and that's what killed it for me in the end. That and the wife complaining that I went everywhere sideways...
You could snap this little beauty up and spend a couple or three years getting it just right. What an ace project car when the basics are all there just begging for the right tickle! Much better noise that jacking up a forced induction four-pot to the sky and wincing every time it comes on boost...
wait, I think I might be preaching to the converted...

I guess there's also the fact that Joe Public still doesn't know what a Monaro is. Non-petrolheads in the market for this sort of car will make a beeline for BMWs/Mercs etc. Boring boring boring, but there you go.
Still, I kind of like the idea that it's an exclusive club and you certainly don't see them every day (well, seeing Mose going around the Guildford one-way system doesn't count
)
