scary noise when braking! and givin it some

approaching a roundabout - breaking relatively hard..... ggggrrrrrggrggrgrrgrg.... lift if brakes it stops.... acelerate hard again same noise - like a can of pop rolling about on the back seat! to and fro

10 minutes investigation and source found - stones in each side skirt! rolling the length of the car!

so panic over - all i need now is time to take the skirts off! - the drain hole is too small at the back to get them out

use the car for work so i imagine it was a poorly surfaced road (north wales b road)- assume that there is a gap at the top inside edge?

too dark and wet to get the car up in the air tonight to see

stones now removed :-) much better noise...


they get in at the rear of the side sill by the looks of it (its the only place i could get them out)

Thats a funny story

I had a similar one when a friend bought a 6 week old Mk3 Cortina Estate and took it back to the dealers with a strange noise coming from the back end. It went into the main dealers several times but no-one could find what was causing the bump, bump, bump, noise that happened when you went round corners..

I found it in the end.. what was it?

A golf ball under the rear seat which was rolling from side to side over the ridges in the steelwork

Did you have to take the skirts off completely. If so, is it an easy job?

didnt have to take them off - welding rod and fingers at the rear of the sill - just prise them out - not easy but easier than taking all the sills off ;-)
