04 VXR versus Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Discussion
I happened to come across a Aston Martin V8 Vantage last night in the mood for some fun! I have a 04 VXR that is as it left the factory so it was an interesting comparison.
Going up through 3rd, 4th and almost topping out in 5th there was not much in it. The Aston definately pulls away, but it is slight and it by no means disapears in to the distance. I would say after a couple of runs the Aston had pulled out a gap of about 200 yards ahead of me.
I was quite impressed by the speed of the Aston. For some reason I had 300bhp as being the output of the 4.3 v8 but it is more like 380! www.astonmartin.com/. I think he was also quite surprised a Vauxhall was almost beating him...

TBH the AMV8 isn't really that quick - something JC criticised in his test. I would have thought a minimum of 400hp would have been assured to keep a step ahead of the 911... But that result sounds about right, similar hp, monaro with a little bit more weight but also a little bit more torque...
Dan's right the reports I have read is that the Aston is only just " quick enough" Thing is, you don't buy the Aston for outright speed though do you? It handles, looks fantastic and the interior is a work of art and you own something very special. If it pulled out 200yds thats a fair bloody distance I would have thought, and thats in no way being disrespectful to you or your car. In two days at the weekend I drove 3 VXR's in various states of tune, an EVO FQ360, a Ferrari 550 and a Maser Gransport, to try and convince myself I could justify the extra money. The Maser yet again was disapointing, the EVO was astonishing in grip and straight line speed but bland other than that, the 550 was lovely full stop, and of course the Monaro VXRs stood out as being good looking and incredible value for money in performance, kit and rarity..........but then wife rings to say "kids are still horseriding stay out a bit longer" and I drove into the Aston showroom and fell in love with the AMV8. I actually refused a test drive because I know what would have happened but I can't put it off for ever.

Also are they going to bring out a stripped down racer version of it? 'cus that will defintly be a very good car...
They sure are! Called the N24, limited to about 20 cars. 200kg lighter and 0-60 in 4.2. Power remains exactly the same @ 385bhp
Looks a bit too stripped out though
Also in a Rally GT version coming out but I haven't seen much about that.

and 200 yards is massive! Did you stamp on the brakes or something? I would have thought he would have pulled a couple of car lengths on you at most but 200 yards is about what you would beat a 1.4tdi fiesta by...
Yes I agree - a few car lengths is close, but 200 yards i would book as "fair enough - i'll stop anoying you now" (imagine if it was the other way round)

No, just the accelerator. Dan_S V8 said:

Do Fiestas get up to 140 then? Just so we are clear, he did jet a slight jump on me a few times and we were accelerating from about 40 to 140, up through 3 gears. It was a long comparison, not a blast off the lights.
It was 200 yards in the end, like it or lump it.

had a Ford Anglia do me the other day. What the hell was in that,
A good few years back I used to own a 105E. It was lime green and looked standard right down to the Deluxe badge on the rear and the chrome hub caps which were placed in the centre of wide-dished steel rims. It was fitted with an RV8 engine and fed through a modified Borg Warner 35 with a lock-up kit and an LSD at back. We plumbed it with nitrous
It was dynoed at 401hp on an engine dyno with a 170hp shot of giggle juice.
Sadly the narrowed 3.0 litre Capri back axle was not secured to the body in a stable enough manner - it kept twisting the rear mountings off under hard acceleration
... and I ended up rolling it twice and then flipping it twice from end to end
Nothing ever overtook me in that car; either on the road or in the air

Not saying you are telling untruths or anything, just thought you should have been a heck of a lot closer than that...
Our 04 CV8 with wortec sport pac (approx same power as you) only lost about 6 car lengths (quite a thrashing tbh!) to an F430 from about 60-140 and that has 490bhp. 200 yards is what, 50 car lenghts!!!

Good real life comparison.
