Oz number plates...info needed
Discussion
Does anyone have any info re getting number plates made up in Oz?
A mate is asking if I'd like him to get me some Oz plates made up with my UK reg on them to stick on the Monaro. Can you get any old plates made up over there, or is it a bit like the UK where you need a registration doc? What would be the coolest state to get them from (I know that one could start an arguement with our Oz chums), and would I be able to get 1 white and 1 yellow from the same state and shop, etc?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Neil

Can't speak for most states but certainly in Vic plates are issued only by the reg authority rather than anyone making them like in UK. If you have personalised rego you order it directly with the rego authority & then collect & pay for the plates when you register the car. I think it's similar in other states although WA is certainly the most liberal with personal rego choices (up to 8 characters from memory) so maybe you can get them done privately in the west? Half of the WA population are sun seekin poms so I'm sure there will be no end of sources for an answer!
PS.. Zane's right, the QLD ones are a bit fancy - they have pictures of palm trees in the centre but that's only cos Queenslanders can't understand writing as well as pictures! (now I've opened a can of worms - let the fun begin!!)

www.fancyplates.com/ are good but I don't know if they'd be able to do QLD plates exactly but they will do custom colours and sizes. No documentation required as they are in Ireland I believe.
Seriously though, in theory if your UK reg satisfies the local Aus number letter rules (basically 6 alpha numeric characters in any order - except WA as mentioned) you can order a personalised rego from the authority in that state & pay for it. It stays yours until you cancel it or sell it. Certainly in Vic you can retain it yourself & never put it on a car(in Oz) and the cost is between $250 - $500 depending on style & content. Simple rule is; if it's not already taken, you can have it. I'd imagine that most UK-legal reg combinations may still be available as most personal plates in Oz are full words (there is not the prefix/suffix rules in Oz like you have here). Been ages since I got mine so I'm sure there must be a way to do it online - I'd suggest you refrained from saying you were outside the state that you are enquiring about and gave a local address. (I can help if you need one in Vic). "Vic Roads" is the Victorian Rego/licencing authority.
This place came up on where I normally live....not sure it is what you want.
It is in Victoria.
I ordered mine at the NATS from....

Thanks folks. I'll have a hunt around the websites of the relevant authorities for the various states and see what I come up with. I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars to actually own the reg...just get a pair of plates made up if I can. Maybe there's an Oz equivalent of fancyplates who'll make up 'show plates' without documentation. If I get lucky I post the details incase anyone else is interested.

Yep...I believe that is what they do at the address I put up. Mainly show plates. In this case for the Summernationals which is a car show held in Canberra every year.
If there are only one or two takers and these plates from the supplier below can be ordered & delivered to a local Melbourne address by Fri 3rd Nov, I'm happy to bring them back with me on the 6th. Ringwood is in suburban Melbourne so deivery to my Melb address should be 1 day. I'll list the address if any takers.

Number plates in Perf are issued by the licensing authority, its not like UK where you go round to your mates shop & laminate your own plate.
Here in paradise(narf narf)where the sun shines all year round, where the water is blue & the sands are golden, and best of all where the chicks are the hottest.
Sorry, yeah here, you basically go in & tell them what style/shape/colour you want, pretty much any word is available up to nine letters for a car & seven for a bike.
They come in either plastic shite like the UK ones or alloy with raised letters, i prefer the alloy ones with the raised letters for two reasons, 1. Some low life little shit in prison has to make it for me and 2. Even a blind person knows who`s bike this is.
The only way to get a set of aussie plates is to get a mate from aussie to register the plates you want & then have them nicked, wrapped & posted to UK, now that's a lot of effort & illegal, easier to just pack your stuff & move to Perf with all the other poms doing the same, oh and don't forget to turn off the light when you leave.
This plate cost 120 quid.

Or this one again on a friends Escort Cozzie was same price, and get this he only pays 300 quid a year comp to insure the Cozzie!!
