Sounds like it could be the interlock switch playing up perhaps?

The interlock that was mentioned will be a microswitch of some sort that either makes or breaks a circuit somewhere in the ignition system.

In this case I would imagine the microswitch makes the circuit that allows the starter soleniod to engage which in turn allows the high current to be supplied to the starter motor.

Have a look down under the clutch pedal (this seems like the most logical piont for the switch) and look for a switch or plunger of some sort around the pedal arm (similar to the one for your brake lights).
If you find it, check the connections etc for clean contacts, reconnect them and see if it starts.
If it does not, take the two contacts off again and bridge them together to make the circuit without the switch. Try and start the car (you shouldn't need to depress the clutch this time as the circuit is made already). If the car starts, the switch is at fault and it will be up to you if you want to replace it as you'll be able to start the car obviously and wont need to worry about the clutch thing anymore.
If it doesn't start, the problem might not be the switch but something else. Seek advice from LSV / Monkfish / Wortec or Greens etc for an opinion from a dealer that knows what they're on about.

does the car have power? (ie: do the lights work?) I had a similar problem with my car once - turned out it was simply loose battery terminals. Quick tighten, and all was well

Mine starts with the clutch up...

a) Do others need to depress the clutch to start?
b) Should I be doing it for some reason?

Depends on the model you have - mines an 04 and will start with the clutch up - my old Camaro wouldn't and required the clutch to be depressed (something to do with stopping you starting it in gear I was told were the origins - bit like all Triumph bikes have to have the clutch held in before they will start (actually I'll change that to most before BigNige corrects me as I believe the Thunderbirds don't)> as for should you, as I understand it yes - it reduces the effort required by the starter motor to crank the engine I believe - although I am sure someone more technically minded can tell you why that is the case!!!!

Well I guess the starter wont have to turn the mainshaft in the gearbox but that has hardly any drag or inertia so I guess it's off no big significance
