Im a Monaro virgin that has almoast convinced the missus that its time to change her mazda 6 sport for a "newer and nicer" motor for her run about and my weekend toy!! I saddly have to combine both jobs in one car because I am never going to get away with a 3rd car !!!!! The question I have after looking around at secondhand examples is ---- Im considering a new VXR and they seem to be stopping importing them am I right???? If this is the case have they have come up with the monaro 500 to flog them off, ( I would love this but think it may be a little to extreme for the missus and it may end up in the middle of some roundabout after she 360s it !!!! Standard I think will be powerfull enough to start!!! Then should I wait to see if there will be any big discounts on the VXR? Before divig in or do I jump now before they all sell out????????? Dilema!! Help!!! www.pistonheads.com/gassing/icons/10.gif

Buy the 500 and get the rev limiter lowered for a while by the dealer and then (after a week or so - if you can wait that long) later get it returned to stock to unleash all that power (be good for running it in too). They can do that easy, just plug in the old laptop and off you go - well and push a few keys too I guess. Had mine lowered to 5800rpm from stock.

That sounds like a good idea!
Is it really as scarry as ive heard?? I really dont want to find the missus and 2 nippers stuck in a hedge!!! On thye way back from the school run!!!!!
Is the standard car user friendly??
And is it going to leave me wanting more and regretting not going for a 500??
Remember my fastest car to date is a Volvo T5 !!!!
Time has come to invest in something sombody else wants when they see me in it not the other way round!!!
Thanks...
PS Im finding this very usefull and thanks to BO55 for pointing me this way from the VXR forum!!

You can always buy a standard VXR and then upgrade it later

I have a Cv8 2004 car and has just had a remap and catback, I drove greens VXR500 and when I got back in mine it was like, where's my engine gone. It was like going from my car to my wife's 2.0DTi Zafira (well not that bad but that's what it felt like).

I drove it with respect but had to see how easy it was to break traction and it was so easy. On mine in the dry I have to give it a fair bit of right foot to get it totally sideways and I gave it a little squirt on the return to greens and the thing broke away at less than 1500 rpm, mental.

If you buy a VXR you will want more and more and more as after time you adjust to the power.

Maybe vauxhall (I'm not sure if this is possible) can have the rev limiter set different for each key as it will remember other settings like seat positions and radio setup. Maybe somebody will know.

I know buy me the VXR500 and you can have my CV8 until you want more power... if you can find where I have moved too.

efilive custom PCM OS tunes allow you 2 modes. Kind of like a valet.
Switchable max rpm and road speed. Ive set it up on mine. You can even set it so low the car is undriveable for security.

Simple solution.

Get the VXR500 and Racelogic TC. Make sure wife uses 'wet' setting only (no wheel spin). Problem solved

one more bit, go drive them at greens and make a decision asap as they don't have many and I was there last saturday and they took deposits on 2 just like that. People had a test drive and was hooked.

Surely a better and cheaper option is to press your right foot down (not too hard now)until the rev counter needle goes part way round the dial...and then change gear. That way the car won't go too fast (or sideways) and it will remain on the road. Next week...steering around corners.

lol if only that actually worked. Try an icy road and turn a corner at 20mph and just watch that lump of an engine act like a pivot spinning the rear end right round in a 360. Even with traction control on I've had the back end step out going round corners on "damp" roads never mind wet or icy ones. Trick is to be ready for it and know how to correct it.

Hmmm...I had a GT2 last winter and got caught out in the snow and ice in it a few times. It was fine (with care). Are you saying they're trickier than a GT2? I'm considering buying one by the way. Had an HSV a few years ago, which again seemed to respond to the gentle treatment in bad conditions.

Um, actually, having owned a 'normal' 911 I'd say the the Monaro was pretty useless in bad weather. Whether it's the torque, the way it's put down, the chassis, the stock tyres.. no idea, it just can't put the power down the way a 911 can.

Yes thanks for the driving lesson!!! I kind of got the jist of the right foot pressure thing!!!
Its the missus that Im worried about!!! U know--- Wooden feet and no concept of feeling the road through the controls!!!!
Jusus this woman has had our mazda 6 ( which is only 165bhp driving the front wheels) Redlining in first at a junction and looking at me the same time and asking why the car wasnt working!!!
I can see it now...with 500bhp it would be tail slides out of the school carpark mania!!!
Understand my dilema!!!

Even I understood that and I normally get the completely wrong end of the stick, must be the wine and beer I consume when I get home, or I'm stupid.

If you get the 500 and get the limiter lowered you/she will still have to be careful even with the TC on as it will let go first then cut in.

I know, move the seat right back and stick a pair of socks in the intake, or you could get the belts disconnected to the SC, that'll slow it down.

Or you could have mine still and buy me the 500

This can be a problem. I've always solved it by ensuring that my wife doesn't drive my cars. We have an arrangement...she doesn't use my car and I don't use her washing machine. It seems to work okay.
