'04 VXR vs '05?
Discussion
Im getting more and more keen on a monaro, and while I'm interested in a new car (see my question below about the £26,995 VXRs) I've been scouring this forum a bit more and read about the boot space issues on the '05 cars.
Does anyone have pics of the two boots to show the difference in size?
How is the LS1 engine compared to the LS2? Tunability, durability, power and torque delivery etc?
Are there any other differences between the '04 and '05 VXRs?
Which would you go for?
thanks!

04 CV8 and mod it.
VXR upgrades you will change anyway, may as well save the cash.
VXR suspension, AVO is better.
VXR brakes , AP Racing is better.
VXR diff , 3.91 is better.
Erm, thats it......and the mods make it quicker and handle better....

I'd actually agree with this.
With a VXR, whilst more showy, they kinda back you down an ally a bit if you want to go the modded route.
Have to say unless going down the vxr route leaves you short financially (and you don't mind loosing a bit more) compared to the cv8 initial outlay, but the modding options seem to be very comparable
Suspension fits all
Brakes for all
Cams + Heads for all
Zorsts + headers for all
Superchargers for all
Diffs for all
Looks like Twin Turbos may be for all
Single turbos for all in pipeline by teh sounds of it
We are really very lucky for choice it and it seems a question of budget really!!!

I would consider if you are ready to modify the car at the off. The standard VXR comes with lots of goodies the CV8 doesn’t. For example...
The headers on the 04 VXR are HSV specification, made from steel and are already pretty good. The experts say there is only a slight performance difference from HSV and the Wortec ones. The CV8 headers are cast iron and will need binning.
The CV8 brakes have been likened to a chocolate teapot whereas the VXR ones are fine for fast road / light track use.
The VXR suspension is just fine for fast road / light track use.
The standard VXR engine has the same power as a CV8 engine with exhaust, remap and filter.
VXR rims are 19" and CV8s are 18".
04 VXRs are rare, there was only 70(ish) 04's imported, CV8s however are not exactly common...
VXRs have a body kit, the CV8s do not.
VXRs have volt and oil pressure gauges, CV8s do not.
And the most important bit.... the VXR comes with a HSV plaque!
My point is... for not much more money, the VXR comes standard with much more stuff and given today’s small price difference, overall IMHO is much better value.
If you have the budget to buy a car for 20k, spend 10k on it immediately then a CV8 would seem a better buy.
Of course a glance to my profile would indicate I am biased... but then I genuinely think if I had gone for a CV8 I would be regretting it... I haven’t got 10k lying around!

I'd also agree with this...if modifying is your scene. Add to the fact you get a good boot too...
As for tunability between the LS1, and LS2...
Both can easily be taken much much further and create more power than 99% of people here would ever dream of, and they are incredibly reliable engines if tuned properly.
Thanks for all your replies... This would be my only car (although not a daily driver, I don't commute by car) so I need a decent boot, and although I would like to explore the world of tuning I'd definitely like to have a sorted car from day one and do the tuning step by step over time.
So basically I think I'm leaning towards an '04 VXR... Shame they're so rare...
Now I just have to decide... M3 (E46), M5 (E39) or VXR...

This looks like a good example (if not in my preferred black): www.pistonheads.com/sales/113053.htm
Is this car/owner known on the forum?
Not having lived in the UK before, what finance options would I have with a private purchase?
thanks!

Tuning aside I quite like the bodykit on the VXR so that pushes me in that direction too...

I agree, I think that the standard CV8 just looks a little too plain. Mind you the later ones are a lot better with the newer style bonnet. I'm not one for 'bling, bling' or like being noticed but if you're spending that sort of wedge you want a car that looks the part as well as sounds and goes like the wind !!
