Oil on air flow meter?
Discussion
Actually not sure if it would be that...
at the RR day it appears my car is running quite rich and suspected it could be oil or contamination on, I think, the air flow meter. Is there an easy way to check this as am going to prob change it just in case then get it re roaded, if its still rich get the mapping looked at

for a pissy bit of plastic? Ferk that I might just go maffless and stuff the concequences, speaking of which, in this god forsaken climate, what are the concequences of going maffless? Tbh if I want to run oiled filters (prob going to go for a charger intake type thing some time) it might be a good idea to ditch the beast?
You could try cleaning the contaminated MAF with brake cleaner (the one in an aerosol can) this 95 times out of a 100 works to great effect.
Then look at different filter options, the sus stainless mesh style (as fitted to a lot of turbo Jap stuff) have good filtration properties, adequate airflow and no oil to mess up your MAF.
Give me a call on 020 8373 7336 (if you want) and I can see if there any of this style filter avaiable in the correct size.

Yeah if its oil just clean it as Aussie says.
Dont forget stock cars run rich anyway, which is why people get tunes on them! So perhaps you are just seeing how it is meant to be.
What was the AFR across your run? Stock can be in the 11's easy. NA should really be 12.8<->13.1
Mafless is fine, Ive been mafless since the day after I bought the car. 20,000 miles and counting. Zero issues. Dont forget the HSV GTS 300KW model the highest power HSV until the VE series was/is mafless.
If you need to replace it, just remove it and have it tuned mafless. No point throwing money at it. Well unless you get an 85mm one but you will need to retune anyway.

the mix was runing 10s then dropping, it has been remapped so I suspect it is contamination on the sensor itself. Presume on these its fairly easy to remove and then check?
With the afm out how long should it take for the brake cleaner to take effect? I know this sounds like simple stuff but have never had to clean a maf before, do I just spray and leave or spray and wipe? One alsp presumes (I sound posh then!) that any contamination should be easy to see?
I'm not worried with the map but will clean the MAF then get the tuners to have a quick look at the engine whilst getting some more work done, am sure they will do.
I might go mafless but am not really in search of a few extra ponies... sure there isnt issues without the maf but might it cause emission problems come MOT?

I cannot speak about running maff less as I have never done it but I am sure Ringram will answer those questions.
As for the brake cleaner, just remove the maff and squirt copius quantities through it making sure loads hit the hot wire, it will evaporate in seconds.
DO NOT wipe clean the wire itself, it is VERY sensitive and you will do far more damage by touching it. You can wipe the rest if you want but you should not have to.
cheers
off to halfrauds in a bit, I cant believe the kn has contaminated it as they generally arent that over oiled out the crate but its the only thing I can think of, unless the map is rich or the unit is on the way out
will give it a clean first then see how it is when I get back to have the next work done.

from the induction link on that website for GTO parts you'll see they list the Granetelli MAF sensors for around the 310-320 US$ so that gives you an idea of how much that "piece of plastic" costs. Think I'd try the cleaning option if I still had a MAF.
