I've been searching but couldn't find anything relating to this - doesn't look like a very popular mod but thought I'd ask away anyway...

Believe it or not I'm quite happy with the CV8, for now, and don't want to get into full induction kits and overly loud exhausts - have enough of that with other cars already.

So was just wondering if anyone has and if it makes a noticeable difference to change the standard filter in the airbox with a K&N or Green item or similar.

Also, how easy is it to open up the airbox and change it over - having it look, is it as simple as undoing those screws round the edge and just lifting it off... What would I find inside?

Thanks

PS - does anyone sell just a back box so I can hear the V8 a bit more but without having to remap and get too loud and shouty?

I bought the K&N panel from Linden, not expensive, and yes, it drops right in. Just undo the fasteners, and remove the pipe to the MAF and the top pulls off. Simple !
Does it make a difference? Probably a slight one, but the flow of a stock AF falls off rapidly as it gets used, whereas the KN one flows better for longer. Then you just wash it and re-oil the thing and off you go. Hope that helps - V8D

A filter on its own makes very little diffenrence on the CV8........the best upgrade is cut the second hole in the air box add a filter and a larger Maf pipe.

If you go to the "Ace Cafe" this Sunday you can hear lots of exhausts............

DBT, the latest Wortec catback zorsts come with a choice of centre sections - "blimey, that's a nice loud sound" or "ooh, what a nice fruity but not overly loud V8 burble"

I've used both and currently have the quiet one in place.
There's no noticeable degradation in performance and the droning in the cabin with the loud section is completely eliminated.

Recommended.

Follow that link for instructions on carrying out the 2nd hole in the airbox mod. I took mine out to have a look one day, its amazing how little space there is to drill those big holes - mate did manage to get around 96mm hole in his. Alternative would be to order up one of the K&N type induction kits for the GTO from the US - retail for around 245US$+carriage and any import duty for the complete kit, replaces the airbox altogether. If you go down the simple K&N filter on its own shop about as I've seen them go on ebay for as little as 35ukp new. Here's the part you want for the 5.7l engines

Edit: Should add there was thread on here last week where one owner with K&N felt he had contamination on his maf causing it to misbehave. Apparently a known problem with oiled filters in any car with a maf fitted.
Oh and as mentioned get one of these as well to improve things greatly- standard pipe on 04 CV8 is very poor design for smooth airflow.

I had one of these and was getting high intake air temps with it. Junked it in favour of the 2nd hole mod, bigger MAF pipe and K&N panel filter.

Jimb0, I tried a New Era induction kit from the states and it was naff - Same problem with high intake temps as there was no heat shield...Anyone tried the "Growler" systems available from Oz?

see my post above for the instructions of how and where to drill the holes - you'll also need some pipe, sticky back plastic and a Blue Peter badge.

Never actually tried this but in theory you could of course fill said 2nd hole with a length of ducting and run it down to the front lower grill and attach it there to try and bring in more cold air.....don't think the standard feed is very efficient at delivering large volumes of cold air.

Is this done as part of any of the Wortec upgrades?

Looking at the Wortec upgrades when it says performance air filter does it therefore mean just a replacement panel filter in the standard, nee modified, airbox - rather than a full on replacement, such as the old 57i.

Thanks for all the views and links from everyone, makes interesting reading...
Coming from an Impreza background failed MAF's are quite common place on the earlier models when replacing the airbox or using oil covered foam filters in the standard box.
Though this is often put down to the MAF being sensitive and being damaged by slightly careless person doing to job, rather than a problem caused by the new filter.

And as for the sound of a soft but lovely V8 burble the first stage of the WOrtec kit is sounding more and more appealing all the time :-)

The Wortec upgrade consists of a panel filter in the original air box combined with a second hole into the airbox. This arrangement has proven to be effective. The other kit mentioned above is not so succesful. We have had one of these on a car brought to us. Air intake temps were significantly higher than with the Wortec arrangement.
