Hi all

picking up my new monaro vxr on friday ( getting rid of the supra ) just wondered what sort of prices people are paying for insurance. i had a quote from adrian flux for £600 but when i went to pay it then asked if it was thatchem cat 1, when all comes to all it is not because vauxhall havent submitted it, so they wanted another £300 . just reading the posts in this site and noticed some having problems with peeling paint on door handles etc , what else should i be looking for

cheers moy

Don't get me wrong it's a great car and you will love it. I have now had mine just over a month and have covered 2700 miles. Here are the problems I have encountered which seem pretty common.

1. Flat spots on the tyres owing the cars having stood for a while.
2. Rust on the discs which can lead to brake judder for the first 500 miles or so. My brakes inproved after 650 miles and are fine now.
3. Leaking door membranes which non approved Monaro dealers seem totally unable to fix.
4. "Sticky" door and interior light switches. Switches just need to be "used" My problem was the drivers side door switch.

Apart from that it's a great car and when subjected to a few modifications is even better.

I hope this helps.

Re the insurance depends on age location and all the other usual stuff - you may want to try A-Plan per the banner - believe they do a number of the Monaro's on this forum (including mine!)

I live in the North East - mid forties - "new" 6.0 VXR purchased Jan 07 - 5-years NCB - car kept on drive (still have to build the garage) Tracker fitted - No points - just under £600 Fully Comp - A-Plan were not the cheapest - Churchill and Norwich Union both offered better quotes.

I had exactly the same issue with Adrian Flux, wasn't on the Monaro but the indicative quote they gave me changed significantly when it was time to pay for it.

£900 sounds a bit excessive, I have 3yrs NCB and with all mods declared was somewhere around the same amount. If I had Full NCB and no supercharger then it would have been around £500. That is with A-Plan, certainly worth trying them.

Peeling door handles does seem to be a bit of a problem, apparently they are only covered for 12 months as well.

You guys want to live over here in NI, I'm 32, 12 years NCB and my premium came in at just over 2 grand, through some wheeling and dealing with a friend who works in a local company I managed to save a grand, but very unlikely such a deal can be worked come renewal in September this year

I tested my mums address in Glasgow and around 600 notes would have done the job there

A bit off topic but....

I remember getting a quote on a Vectra V6, £9,000 fully comp eek They then sent me an email and said that if I phoned them they might be able to lower it by as much as £200 by asking more questions hehe

I took out insurance elsewhere for £500

Hi lads thanks for all your replies, i used elephant.co.uk this morning before i saw the A plan banner and it came to £650, i tried churchill and vauxhall to name a couple but they all wanted trackers fitted which would cost about £600 including the subscription fee. i will keep an eye out for any of the problems that are mentioned in the posts. having a quick look at other posts i noticed the one about changing the mirrors why is that needed? just 24hrs until the car is ready

The angle of view with the standard mirror when looking right whilst merging with traffic is crap. The mirror will give far better visibility. I am pretty sure BO55 will agree.

A plan seem to be pretty good... insured the HSV monaro for around £500, the HSV Clubsport for £440, and the commodore for £430 or there abouts..

I ended up with £900 but with 2 speeding fines and class one business use and 35000 miles a year I thought that was OK, given that there is no tracker requirement.

Hi Moy - if you look in the FAQ's under the 'This Forum' tab at the top of the page, you'll find all the answers you're looking for I think!
