Brute force ECU password

Going back to password protected ECU maps (by the way I can now totally undertand the reason behind it) - what if your tuner was no longer available and you needed more work doing. The ECU is locked and the original password lost for ever. How easy, in this situation, is it to recover from without buying a nice new ECU?

You can buy a second hand LS1 ECM from the US for $75. So it may be cheaper to do this than pay someone to hack their way in.
In fact I think there is one on the pistonheads parts for sale page for £100. Thats the cheapest way to go. Drive to your new tuner and ask them to set it all up for you. Maybe this time asking for a copy of the password or for it to be left unlocked.
