new Quicksilver Monaro VXR
Discussion
Found your site a few weeks ago and reading the threads convinced me that a new Monaro was the thing for me. I was hunting around for something to take on the Cannonball run this year ( once in a lifetime deal) and was considering half a dozen different cars ( Alpinas, M3, M5, RS4, S class mercs ( the big ones)) but they would all be second hand as I couldn't afford them new and then I spotted some of the prereg monaros going at huge discount and I thought ok I'll have one of them please. I was originally going for a Red one but it was sold before I committed and the dealer located another couple for me and I got another 1000 off the price ( I'm paying 27K). Living in Northern Ireland I didn't have the luxury of shopping around for a better deal as this car is in wrexham 40 miles south of liverpool and then I only have 90 odd miles to the ferry in Holyhead. I should be picking it up sometime next week and I can't wait. Apparently this will be the 4th one in N.I. so I'm not likely to see another one. will keep it for a while but I'm really keen on the new dodge challenger and hope it comes out over here. the SRT8 version should be good. I've always wanted an American Hemi as I had two Australian 6 cylinder hemis. would love a new VXR8 as well. don't like the name seems to be ripping off Dodge. Anyone else going on the cannonball this year? at least the price is a lot more reasonable than the gumball.
somebodys lucky, the gumball would be great but man they overcharge. at 4500stg the cannonball seems to be more realistic. I had originally planned on taking a banger on the crumball rally this year but it runs at pretty much the same time as cannonball and at least I will get a chance to see cars I would normally not ever get to see, unless of course everyone is driving an audi or bmw diesel as I see nothing but that around here every day. I have never lived in a place before where everyone is concerned about fuel economy to such an extent that any kind of performance car is seen as crazy. I have lost count of the number of Audi TDi's running around with RS bodykits and straight out exhausts and owners who think they have something special, even most cabriolets are diesel. I can't wait to take the monaro for a cruise around town on the first saturday I get it.

I know, but unless I am very lucky I won't get a chance to own an original hemi. have considered doing a rebuild and putting in a keith black hemi in an old car. I'm not brave enough or rich enough to do an engine swap in a new car. I guess I'm a retromod at heart which is why the new Challenger, Mustang and the new Camaro really appeal to me. there really are too many cars and not enough time ( or money).
Where in NI are you gargoyle? I'm up in Stroke City (Derry/Londonderry) with my 2006 CV8, there's 3 more that I know of over here - one in Bangor, one in Coleraine and another down on the East side of the country too...
...in saying that one was wrecked back at the end of Jan/start of Feb in the cop ramming session around Belfast so not sure if that was the one from Bangor direction...???

I suppose I might be physically miles away but politically we are living in the same place. my mums side of the family has lived on the border between newry and dundalk for nearly a century and I mean literally on the border ( out the kitchen window and you are in the republic). my wife and I lived in Forkhill for a year but we are back now in Jonesboro renting a small house with baby number two on the way. What better time to buy a Monaro
Would I be right in assuming you are with Todd and sons insurance in Omagh, they claim to be the only company in northern ireland that will take on group 20 cars. I had to leave quinndirect as they wouldn't provide cover and Todd and sons were the first I came across in the auto trader. I'm assuming the monaro that rammed the cops was stolen?

Yeah the car that was used in the ram was stolen, I was over in California at work HQ and got a text from the friends back here saying that the cops had set up a roadblock to stop the car, and the guy then proceeded to ram the roadblock with the 'ro, had me filling the bags until I got one of the friends to confirm mine was still in hiding while I was away...
I'm actually insured through Open and Direct (finally through Priviledge insurance who they are brokers for), all thanks to a friend who was able to get the quote down under a grand for my March '06 CV8. Not sure where the other guys are insured through, but from what the Priviledge staff said there are actually 23 groups on their listing (first time I had ever heard of more than 20 myself), of which the 'ro slots into the 23 bracket...

I suppose I wasn't thinking who actually had my insurance. todd and sons got me on with Zurich specialist insurance and what I thought was a good deal covering the monaro and my new A4 2.0T avant special edition (220ps) which is 2 groups higher than a standard 200ps model, both on one policy for 2050stg. 800 for the audi and 1200 for the 'ro. I didn't shop around much as I was happy at that. quinndirect was charging around 1200 a year for myself and the wife in the audi. however I have an 8000 mile limit on the monaro now.
I hadn't heard of 23 groups before either but since the 'ro is still in the top grp it doesn't really matter.

Well I finally picked it up the new 'ro today and got it home on the holyhead ferry and sitting here I'm still grinning from the thought of it. a true dinosaur of a car and I don't mean it as insult but a compliment. heaps of go and that roar when you do hit the go pedal is pretty cool. must say I was too afraid to let off the traction control until I got home this evening and just tried it out on a nice gentle righthand uphill bend and got a little chirp but as soon as you back off a little it corrects itself nicely. there won't be too much of that though, I hate having to buy tires.
one thing that concerns me is a couple of times on starting the engine a warning chime went off and the digital display showed up Check Engine with a a picture of an engine with a lightning bolt through it. It disappears though several seconds later and seems to be running fine. I had a quick look through the handbook but didn't come across that warning symbol anywhere. I pray that it is a common thing. does it happen to anyone else?
Can't wait for the cannonball, and looking forward to meeting another 'ro owner (black 06).

If you have bought a pre-reg, I think that it is due to condensation having formed in the petrol tank whilst the vehicle was standing. Only a small amount of petrol was in the tank, and therefore condensation can form on the inside. Mine had the same problem, but a few tanks of juice cleared it up. When Paul (Wortec) did the remap, he checked my engine codes. The problem had cleared by then and nothing showed up as a fault. He said that it was probably from the oxygen sensor. I haven't had any more problems from it other than the twice it happened during the first couple of weeks.

Excellent stuff, thanks for the reassurance. it has happened once since I filled the car up last night before I got the ferry and not since. I wasn't expecting my wife to take such a shine to it but she is out in it this morning with the baby and doesn't find it scary to drive which is good. Timing was great too the weather is picking up and it's nice to drive it without having to worry about learning how to handle it in the wet straight away.

I may be down your neck of the woods this coming weekend too Gargoyle, not right down to Dundalk but in that direction as I've a Manta 400 to shoot this weekend in the Bangor area

Not sure what I"m up to this w/e but if I have an hour or two to spare I'll try and drop by and say hello. What is a Manta 400? is it the old Vauxhall? or something else entirely?
The Manta 400 is..

Awesome car. I've had a few (non-400s) and they are a riot.
