engine in the vxr 04?
Discussion
The seller says it has 382bhp. When did the GXR first come out. A bit confused as I thought the GXR's came with the 6 ltr engine. Is this car and year (04) o.k. and was there many factory re-calls on this model and year. Also, are the earlier cars easily tunable? Sorry about all the questions but need all the info before I buy it.

The 04 VXRs have the 5.7l LS1 engine but in a higher state of tune than the standard Monaro. Along with the increase in power you also get a shorter ratio diff which gives it better acceleration. The LS1 is very tunable with a huge range of aftermarket parts and quite a few specialists in the UK. Heads, cams, intakes, headers, superchargers, you name it!
also, you should keep in mind that whilst this "04 VXR" was the original UK model, it's by no means the first of the Monaros from a recall or product reliablity point of view. The car you are looking at is in fact the second series of the HSV GTO coupe, of which the first series was launched circa 2001 in Oz. The second series had a few typical upgrades from the original as you'd expect, including full interior update to keep in line with the interior of the higher volume Holden & HSV saloon range of the time (VZ series commodore/HSV Z series Clubsport & GTS in Oz). for a full picture on the cars "breeding" and timeline you should check out the HSV.com.au website and insert "HSV GTO Coupe" wherever you want to read VXR Monaro, as this is the identical car except for a couple of small UK compliance mods and the addition of the Oz "GTS" 19" shadow chrome alloys instead of the black 18's that ran on the Oz GTO coupe. (from memory there is a detailed section on all past models). When the 05 coupe was released, this had the biggest changes in the model's brief history, going to the 6.0l engine as mentioned below, and a significant reduction in boot size due to relocation of the fuel tank. As already mentioned, it's highly possible with several basic mods (mainly exhaust & remap) to be at 435 BHP on that 5.7l car, and very easy to go further (easiest next step is S/C or T/T). 5.8l is a misprint unless it's been re-bored!! I'd be checking out the mod list as an easy way of substanciating the claimed BHP figure as it was certainly sub 400 in std form.
