My 13,000 mile T350 made an odd noise and when I stopped I noticed that the 'fan' belt was completely shreaded. I have had the car recovered home.
Do you think this anything worse than just a bit of bad luck?
Looking at it, apart from the usual lack of access, replacement looks fairly straight forward. However, I am just recovering from an injury so will not be attempting the repair myself.
Is this something a mobile mechanic could do and can anyone recommend a mobile mechanic in the Chelmsford Essex area.
Thanks

Just had a proper look. The only problem seems to be getting the Air Conditioning belt between the pulley and the crank damper housing (the gap looks to be too small to get the thickness of the belt through).
Any advice and any recommendations of someone local that could do this for me will be gratefully received.

You need to undo the 4 screws in the center of the lower driving wheel, which could than taken from its shaft, so you can change the belt.

However, check the mount of you power-steering pump, which could come up against the belt if loose, maybe that has damaged the belt.

Many thanks to Granturadriver. Your comments make a lot of sense and despite pain from my ribs I reckon I can dive in and do this myself. I will have a good look to make sure the pump is secure because it is very close to the belt.

I went through several A/C belts over the course of a few months, including one which failed in the same manner as you described in your original post.

On closer inspection, the likely reason was that the two pulleys were out of true.

The fix was to modify one pulley slightly to get the alignment back.

This has been in place for some time without any recurrence of the problem, but I'll give it another few months before I tick it off.

darkmark; it looks like I have the same problem.
The bottom pulley is out of line with the top pulley. The bottom pulley is basically too close to the engine and this makes the belt run against the edge of the top pulley cutting the edge of the belt.

This raises two questions.
1, how has the bottom pulley moved and does it indicate something more catastrophic with the engine (does Dom or any other specialist have a view?)
2, how do I adjust the pulley out (with a shim?)

Worried owner - grateful for any comments!

Chill Winston, no major engine problems here - probably left the factory like that...

Have a word with Mat Smith at Mat Smith Sportscars for the fix, IIRC it was a modified pulley with a little extra machined off the back to bring the system back into line.

All good since :-)

Cheers,

Mark
