Glovebox damper no longer damping
Discussion
The glovebox in my ’09 V8V is no longer damped when I open it – it just flops open. I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet, but does anyone know if this is a fairly simple fix? Is it easy to access? I’m wondering if the damper has failed or if the damper has become disconnected. By the way, this is only the second thing that has gone “wrong” in the almost 7 years I’ve owned the car (the other was the AM band of the radio when it was 2 years old).
Morning Speedraser and congratulations, you have just won the prize for "First World Problem of the Week".
I had never really noticed that it was damped but have just checked and assume you're talking about just the last inch or so of travel that is all that appears to be damped on mine. Pretty floppy until then.
But seriously, I think this is a sign of impending doom and your previously reliable car is about to fail in every conceivable way and cost you $1million to rectify.
Surely Karl Franz has dismembered that part of his car several times and can tell you exactly how to fix it?

Its should be smoothly damped all the way - its not a Lada you know!
The crimped metal piece that forms the loop on the nylon cord that clips to the glovebox lets go quite easily - ask how I know after changing my microfilters!
You can buy a new damper for £7 but BR crimped mine back on as changing the damper looked rather tricky given the offset location of its main body under the top of the dash. Might have pulled a muscle or six!

Ken, that makes perfect sense -- thanks. Is it accessible when the cabin filters are removed? And how do you know about the cabin filter "cause" (you said I should ask...)?
Pete, thanks for the encouraging words
Its accessible with/without cabin filters. When you change them you leave the glovebox dangling by the damping cord as its a pita to unclip it and then try and clip it back whilst it constantly tries to retract. This is fiddly business and you need a laparoscope and a scrubs nurse really Pete, thanks for the encouraging words

I’ve just fixed mine- the cord crimp must have fallen off as it was just a piece of string without a loop.
It’s an easy fix with the glove box out (7 screws), and you may as well do the micro filters at the same time.
I pulled the cord out as far as it would go, then tied a loop in the string using a noose knot: https://www.animatedknots.com/noose-knot.
I then looped a small cable tie to the end. Get another long piece of string and use it to pull the cable tie though the glove box (and stop it retracting back up), and screw the glove box back in. Then pull the cable tie loop down and clip it into place (a little fiddly, but accessible and easy to see).

The damper went on my V12VS, you can find them online, https://astonmartinbits.com/models/4-DB9-2-4-2-12/...
A glovebox ? Luxury !!
We DB11 owners however, have it tough. Apart from the meagre capacity of the centre armrest, we are obliged to make do with the shallowest door pockets known to man, and what can only be described as a minor indentation in front of the infotainment scroll wheel where no more than about 67p in loose change can be kept.

Hi
I had this happen to me. I tied the string to a medium sized key ring loop and used a long and thin screwdriver to hook it on to the plastic glovebox attachment. You could insert the tip of the screwdriver in to the loop to keep it attached. Or use a telescopic magnet.
I hope this helps.

A... coin tray? ROYAL OPULENCE! Us Vantage owners are paupers in comparison! We do not have such comfort and coins must be kept aligned on the rear parcel shelf. We DB11 owners however, have it tough. I connected another thread loop to the original nylon cord so that it could reach the glovebox but it still slams open, if we extend the cord too much then it does not work properly?I had this happen to me. I’ve probably missed the point, but did you know the thin slit next to where the gearstick/should be is a coin holder? If not, that’s some useless info for you, lol.

Nah, I was just playing along, no worries! If not, that s some useless info for you, lol.

No such thing as useless info, I knew about this slit but never use it as such on my previous car.

And on the new model, they removed it anyway.
