Seems a shame not to mention the fact that you have 8 more (200% more!) more cylinders than most other cars on the road, so I bought a couple of the proper V12 badges. The idea was to put one opposite the DB9 badge, but it looks wrong because it's noticeably smaller. Where do they officially go? Or would it seem frightful and tacky and best left alone?

If your DB9 has the older style indicators rather than the later DBS “in the strake” style (same as DB9 GT) it may be worth googling pictures of V12VSs to get an idea on the official placement. But as you say, it will only be any good for the traffic lights GP.

I went out to take a photo of the back, but it was so shiny all you could see was the house behind it!
So I did a rather poor mock-up on a photo I took for the insurance valuation...

That's the least offensive position I can find on the back. Ideally it would say 'DB9' on the left and 'V12' on the right, but we are where we are.

Size sounds right to me. At the end of the day it’s your car, so there’s no need to feel any pressure to place them in a certain position. Just do whatever you like. I got my two from astonmartinbits and I don’t recall there being a choice of size. It was a long time ago but I am fairly sure the V12 badges are all the same size on the Gaydon cars, possibly even on latest V12 Vantage too? That car has them on the side in amongst in gills, scoops and fins etc. Is the interior one in that car bigger? Maybe. But as Octavarium said, perhaps a V12 number plate would be a good alternative too, if something is available that works for you? Why overbadging is stupid:
1. Normal everyday individuals are not impressed. They do not know what they are looking at and don’t care anyway.
2. Those who do know what they are looking at immediately know that the badge shouldn’t be there and that you (or someone) has put it there. Thus, the very people likely to be most impressed will immediately think ‘what a Rodney’.

and yes I know putting a V12 badge on a V12 car isn’t technically ‘overbadging’, it will just look wrong and only be noticed and ‘commented on’ by folks like the venerable doyens of this forum…

Well this is why I've had the badges for a few months and still not used them. I agree there is a 'breed standard' and with Astons more than most, it should be kept to. I will just have to ensure I park side on to everyone else...

Regarding point number 2 from Calinours, I suspect most on here will know if it looks “right” or not. I may be wrong but I think the only Gaydon cars with a V12 badge on the boot are Vantage, ie the six speed original and later S models. I have seen cars for sale where the “Vantage(S)” badge was removed and the “V12” badge was repositioned slightly to the right. Now, that does look weird to me. Personally I think you can’t go wrong with placing them on the front wings near the indicators. It’s how they come from the factory, it’s a bit more discreet and those who know will know. And of course, what Adam said!

In fact, in Pentland Green, it's surprisingly subtle and I suspect most ordinary folk wouldn't give it a second glance in the supermarket car park. I only open the exhaust valves if some upstart needs to be Astoned...

Wasn't there a Special Edition DB9 that had the V12 badges? If so can anyone find a photo?

Presume irony Adam, but it does emphasise the point, that any badges can only really be seen/read, when we are close to a stationary car.

So, to conclude, the advice is:
put discrete V12 badges on the wings, in the same position the factory hs been known to put them on the bigger car and not the shouty ruffian little Vantage where sometimes the V12 is shoehorned in and there’s a need to advertise that one comes with ‘bigger tackle’ than the otherwise similar looking contempories… All on here, naturally, just as with the ladies, all know what that actually means……

Not necessarily - on most journeys I'm stuck in a line of traffic, often at speeds <30mph, and so the occupants of the car behind have ample opportunity to check out the rear silverwork from quite short range...Which rear badges can you read?

If the occupants of the car behind, don't know that all DB9s have the same V12 engines, then they might see your V12 badge and think it has something to do with a World War II rocket.

I took the Vantage + S script off and left the V12 badge where it was and added the S ( originally red ) all resprayed in black by Works.
