I've got an itch - please help me scratch it (RX8)
Discussion
I went to a Mazda dealer to look at MX5s last weekend, I'm not going to be buying until September / October as I have to keep the ST for at least 9 months but no harm in early leg work! Whilst there I sat in an RX8 and really liked what I saw.
Various reviews seem very strong although there is the obvious question on Fuel economy and Oil.
What I need to know is, approx, how much per month one should budget for running an RX8. I do about 12,000 miles a year now, my daily commute is about 15 miles each way in 40/50 urban dual carriageway. I do like to get out on longer drives on the weekend (obviously, this is PH afterall!)
My ST is averaging just under 30 MPG at the moment (ABout 34 during the week and 28-30 on the weekends. What should I expect from an 8 (either type really, this will be my fist foray into RWD territory but the slight torque increase and slight price decrease make the low power version slightly more attractive at the moment, although I do hear the siren sound of 9000 rpm in the back of my mind!)
Please talk me out of this and back into an MX5, which is cheaper (2nd hand) but less practical (I have no kids but do pick people up from airports etc now and again - can they get the train?!?!)

Ok expect mid to low 20's, with 250ish out of a tank but it's not just about the fuel economy, there's very little out there that will handle like these do AND carry 4 adults and bags for the same money. I'm on my second changed from a 190 to a 230 PZ, there's not a whole lot of difference in real terms, the 230 will out drag a 190 in a straight line but there's next to nothing in it once you hit the bendy bits.

I loved mine , the only downside is realtivly poor ecconomy , especialy in the urban cycle expect around 20mpg pure urban +/- 3 or 4 depending.
Had mine for 30k+ miles from new.
Its seriously grown up proper car compared to the little mx5, IMo not as much fun but more competent all rounder.

The 230 pz looks better than the 190 too, as it's been dropped a little and has the prodrive bodykits, cup mirrors, spoiler and 18" prodrive alloys.
Latest rotary engines on an RX8 need a lot of attention in early few thousand miles, check oil about every 500 miles during this period to prevent wear to the rotary tips then less frequently after this. When buying used make sure it has full Mazda service history and that you find out how frequently the oil checks carried out by the owner.
Services required about every 12/12.5k IIRC.
Fuel economy wise, this car should give you the same as a 3/3.3l v6 engine car such as a BMW 330.
I want 1 of these too.

Go for it, you won't regret it. Sign yourself up to every fuel reward scheme going and join the owners club to get the discount on oil from Opie.
I've had mine for a few months now and love it. Even more so having done my first track day in it on Monday.
Actual running costs aren't that bad - servicing is very roughly around £100 first service, £200 second, £300 third - all of which can be reduced by supplying own oil (and for the third service own spark plugs). Tyres are just over £100 a piece depending on when you buy (the price seems to be quite variable) and some people get nigh on 20k from a set with rotation.
Fuel costs do seem to depend very much on your driving style. There's a big list of people on the OC who get 300 miles a tank (50 ish quid fill up). 200-220 seems to be my average but I don't have the lightest right foot. Got down to 9mpg an track on Monday.

Agree on depreciation and economy. Philippa's brother had one for a couple of years - in his opinion it was ok and was certainly not blown away by it.
For the same money there are several others cars that should be considered.
You're on telly again mate - 5 life now. Such language! For the same money there are several others cars that should be considered.
