Are they good cars?? My dad is on the verge of purchasing a good runner at SEVERE mates rates- £400!!!!

It has alloys, a lightweight toolkit, origional interior, proper engine bay piping all cleaned up and its gun metal grey.

Buying it as an investment. Is it a good idea??

They can have scary running cost. The engine bay is so tight any job is major. There are stories of engine out jobs to fix a £3 rubber pipe.

Otherwise its a Nissan and generally quite reliable, take a look at the owners club 300zx.co.uk and ask around there for things to look out for.

I wouldn't have one unless I had deep pockets, and was prepared to dig into them, just in case.

If this kind of thing doesn't scare you then go for it - I love the 300zx.

Mind you at that price you could probably break it and sell the parts to us 200sx users. Gearboxes, Brakes, Wheels, AFM - you would recoop your money straight away. And I am sure the 300zx owners would be glad of the rest of the bits.

So actually a good investment.

Good cars.. but if they do break then they can cost a fortune to fix because as previously said there is no space to work on the car in the engine bay.. The 1989 cars are the earliest and i'm afraid to say most prone to things blowing up.. But for £400 even if it does go pop you'll more than cover your costs if you break it for parts..

As above really but from working on them it's not really that bad. If you have a major failure then its can be big money but the main problem is the engine electrics.
From a starting point of £400 for a performance car its very cheap, get it checked out and good luck!

£400?? He can sell the gearbox for that. Obviously there's something seriously wrong with the car... ? A '89 Fairlady running okay will fetch a min of 2K. If it's a SWB manual then double it at least.

No serious problems, just a bit of paint needed on the rear spoiler and bumper, btu another friend is doing this for a laughably small fee. And its running okay, but unfortunately is a LWB Auto, but in its mildly tuned state still hits 60 in 7 secs before exploding.

Get it, thats peanuts for a car. If it does go wrong, sell the bits that still work and he'll get his money back, until then, enjoy the car smile
