Mk1 MR2 bad gears?
Discussion
Hi guys, I'm considering getting my hands on a MR2, and saw this ad
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/191658.htm
it say "does not jump out of 5th", I'm assuming hes talking about 5th gear. Was that a problem that Mk1's had?
Also, £2200 seems a little steep, but if it is a VERY well kept car, it might be worth it...

Yep, its a known fairly common fault (though I've never had the problem in 3x mk1's I've owned) and more likely in higher milage cars. Can't remember if its a problem with the synchros again... Easy way to test for it, take the car onto the motorway, come off then back on the accelerator, they should only be a small amount of movement, but obviously if it pops out you know the problem.
I wouldnt expect any problems like that, or indeed any major mechanical faults (or expensive items soon to need replacing) on a mk1 actually worth over 2k. For me I would have a close look at that car, as you should get a prime example for 2k...
Pics not the best (or maybe its my eyes), but I'm sure I can see a bit of bubbling at the front valance, the rear wing has a dent in a awkward place (on the corner) and are expensive to replace.
As an example, I payed 1k for my 66k miler, solid mechanicals and mint interior, but with some scruffy bits round the arches, and I think I over payed by a couple hundred quid...!
As I said, should be very very clean for 2k upwards (seen decent superchargers go for about that!).... Dont be put off if it's not as nice as you'd hoped, walk away and find another one, great wee motors

I agree, current price for a minter n/a is about £1500. A mint supercharger is about £3k, possibly £3.5k
As already said, the 5th gears on mk1s can be iffy but IIRC it is something that can be fixed with the gearbox still in. I think it is the selector fork that does it but i'm going on my ropey memory here so probably wrong.

I actually fixed the 5th pop out problem on my MK1 yesterday, it's a fairly simple job (it would have been a lot easier if I'd seen the top bolt on the gearbox casing before I started to lever it off as well!), you just remove the nearside rear wheel to get access, and then take gearbox cover off and replace the selector fork and ring and that fixes it. Parts are only about 70 quid from Toyota I think. As already said, the 5th gears on mk1s can be iffy but IIRC it is something that can be fixed with the gearbox still in. Mine cost me 500 quid, with 138k on it, bit of rust round the rear arches and the front valance but mechanically it's fine. It just did a trackday at Anglesey no problem as well!

i've had a MK1 MR2 NA and a MK2 MR2 Turbo, the MK1 was a giggle and a wicked cheap little car but i missed the creature comforts like air con and bought a MK2 Turbo. a friend of mine gave me a ride in his rev3 MK2 Turbo and i loved it and wanted one but at the time couldn't afford it and test drove a MK2 NA and hated it! the MK2 is only fun with the 3SGTE IMO. and before people start moaning each to there own! it's just what i felt. the MK2 needed the extra push.
the MK1 is a hoot in NA format but i've been in a supercharged MK1 and it's defo worth holding out for a SC if your budget will stretch!
