Thinking about buying an older jap car to keep in the garage and bring out on sundays during the summer. I quite like the look of the old RX7's but know nothing about them? Do they suffer from the rebuild issues of the newer RX's? Any known weak points or issues in general?

If not an RX-7, feel free to recommend something around the £1000 mark. I don't mind getting my hands a little dirty repairing/replacing things.

Radiators clog easily, front crossmembers (hidden when you first look under the bonnet - have to remove plastic panneling), radiator fan couplings are fragile, and the electronics can be fun, particularly the heater controls and central console warning lights. Oh, and rust generally smile

I have a clean 86 with a variety of faults (not the expensive ones mind) that im looking to clear my driveway of for beer money if anyones interested. Needs to make room for the return of my other fun car which is due back from restoration

Very tempted, though dunno how good the conversion is...

I always recommend these, but a mk1 MR2 is excellent value ususally, and you should get a decent one for 1k. When I think about it, theres loads of old 80's jap sports cars / coupes that go unloved and for buttons these days, some still pretty respectable perfromance wise, and lots (apart from rust) will go on for ever...

The yanks should have let the Japanese redesign the space shuttle in the 80's, would have been a hell of a plasticky interior, but would just be run in about now... nuts (and thats my entry for random comment of the year award)

Cheers guys, good info. SBW, is yours driveable? Is it road legal? Is it far from Leicester? Email me if you wish, and it'll probably keep Ted happier if you do.

I had an Elford turbo MK1, great car & felt bl**dy quick! sounded like an aircaft taking off.

Elford were a Christchurch based Mazda dealer the cars were endorsed by Mazda, if you can find one of these you'll be laughing yes
