In my Legacy B4 owning days I was told that cone filters are a bad idea on the Subaru engines (assume yours is also an EJ20?).
The MAF is pretty weak anyway and cone filters don't help it. Apparently the stock airbox is pretty good and some good gains can be made from a replacement panel filter though.
If you must go for a cone filter make sure it's not heavily oiled as that's what breaks the Standard MAF.
On most turbo cars I've found a decent cone airfilter will make a difference provided there is a flow of good cold air and it's shielded from any hot engine air, just the Impreza/Legacy EJ20 doesn't seem to like them.

My panel filter is of the oiled variety too... I'd imagine most replacements are.If you must go for a cone filter make sure it's not heavily oiled as that's what breaks the Standard MAF.
Litchfield type 25 impreza which makes over 400 bhp retains the standard air box..... induction kits are a waste of time unless you are after big big power as the standard air box is not retrictive enough to change it,plus you will reduce inlet temps by having a sealed inlet...... cold air kits that fit a filter into the wing area req a remap as it screws the maf scale up enough to put the fueling all to cock.... uprated panel filter like a green cotton or k+n is the way to go

Go for a replacement element (if you must). It will probably monkey with your MAF though.
How? Why? If you mean it will contaminate the MAF if you over oil it then that's true but mine has been fine with my replacement K&N.hey matey iv got a 97 STi and i replaced the air box with a cone filter.... huge mistake within 2 weeks the MAF sensor was playing up and caused me lots of problems. I was then recommended to get rid of the cone and replace with a panel filter etc.
Altho i must admit now iv got a whole new aftermarket ECU and the MAF sensor has been removed i have again installed a cone filer to which i did see power increases, also having the small intake scoop above the filter does make a slight difference in my eyes.

sure-have an aftermarket hks ecu which i enquired about having fitted by wrc technologies and they said itd be better for them to reprogramme existing ecu with ecutek on their rolling road
It depends what you plan to do with the car. Also depends which HKS ecu it is.Message Board | Japanese Chat | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
