A colleague's daughter is buying an RX8 and wants some advice from someone who knows about cars. While I am a massive car geek I don't really know anything about rotaries, or indeed RX8s, so I wondered if I could open it up to the floor...
What - in very basic non-mechanical female terms - do you need to look out for?
What should you expect to be paying for an older example in good nic? She's apparently seen a 231 for £4,500, which sounds conspicously low to me, especially as the ad gave no extra info and only had one photo.
Anything else? Just going to relay the message and it's for someone who 'wants a pretty coupe', not a real petrolhead, so anything complex will go over her head I suspect.

Might be best to get over to the RX8 owners club for more information but if it was my money I would stay away, its sounds too low to me.
A full dealer SH is a must, as is confirmation that all the recalls have been done. Check for the usuals, accident damage, clutch slip etc.
At that price I would want to see evidence of lots of invoices. She needs to have a really good drive of the car and when warm make sure if revs all the way to the beep without hesitation. It should be really smooth.
They need regular wheel alignment so check for uneven tyre wear and that it drives nice and tight and straight.
If there is a local dealer or specialist near by get it checked out but I would think £6K would be a better bet. It could be a good one but they are not cars you want to buy on the cheap.

RX8 owners club is the place she needs to go, they have excellent buying guides and FAQ's and its a very helpful and friendly forum.
She does need to check it starts from cold and warm without any real hesitation, hesitation when warm could mean the cat is on the way out which isn't cheap to replace (OEM are £1200, but others are much cheaper £300-ish)

Also this thread dispels most of the myths and gives out good advice on rx8's

The owners club FAQ section really is rather good though and will either convince you to buy one or not.
As said above anything less than £6000 for an Rx8 and dont touch it with a s
tty stick. Remember when new its a £24000 car would you think a 6 year old BMW for £4500 was ok?
