1999 hyundai lantra 1.9 gls diesel lacks oomph up hills

1999 hyundai lantra 1.9 gls diesel lacks oomph up hills. recently bought from a man who had it from new and was reputedly a Sunday driver. Runs well on the straight - loads of of grunt (albeit a little slow coming through the pedal) but as soon as you hit a sniff of a hill the revs drop right off and you will be overtaken by a plastic pig. just had service and engine clean. no better. any ideas??? cheers
