1993 Mazda 323 engine info

Hi there,
a friend recently bought a 1993 ish reg 1600cc mazda 323. runs great for the mileage and pulls well
as an owner of an early eunos roadster i assumed the engines would be identical (B6ZE) but the engine in the 323 appears to be SOHC yet has '16 valve' on the cam cover and is injection
from everywhere i've looked i can only find one SOHC 16 valve injection engine and that was an 1800 B8ME
so, has it had a transplant from 1600 to 1800 earlier in its life, or are there 1600cc SOHC 16 valve engines?!
