Hmm I would go for a fully synthetic oil. Try Castrol Edge

Also have a look at http://www.opieoils.co.uk/ they will recomend an oil for your car.

Last year Subaru HQ issued a bulletin to UK subaru dealers to start using 10W40 semi-synth instead of 5W30 semi-synth they always used. Opie oils will quote you 5W40 Fully Synth. Popular in the modified Subaru scene is Millers 10W60 fully synth or Motul 300V 10W50 fully synth. I've been told by another independent oil only stockist that 20W50 fully synth is the beez neez although few oil dealers stock this.

It's horses for courses really. I would have to say that on a PPP scoob you won't go far go wrong with a 5W40 or 10W40 fully synth oil. If your scoob is heavily modified then something more in the lines of 10W50/60 fully synth is the way to go.

Is castrol edge truly synthetic, or a hydrocracked mineral oil?

Don't use fully synthetic oil unless you are using it for a track day and intend changing back to semi synth afterwards. The fully synthetic stuff rots piston rings much quicker, and probably rots other seals as well.

There's anecdotal evidence to suggest that using the fully synth ester based oils permanantly, reduces the life of the piston rings noticeably. The fully synth stuff is fantastic for race engines which get rebuilt routinely, not so great in a road car engine, day in day out. The semi synth stuff is nearly as good and hasn't got quite such a negative effect on engine seals.

Sounds like a load of internet originated tosh to me.

I used fully synth(Silkolene ProS/R) for over 50,000 miles on my last car which was a heavily modded turbo engine running 25psi. The engine was rebuilt at the beginning of my ownership and consistently pulled 150psi when compression tested from the end of the run in period to when I sold it and never leaked a drop of oil.

I read ages ago about synthetic oil damaging rubber oil seals because it didn't have the correct additives, but this was aaaaaaaaaaaages ago and since then the additives have been added. Never heard of it damage piston rings, can't see why a company would sell oil that buggers your engine.

A good 5w-40 or 10w-40 synthetic is ideal, in winter months the 5w will be better then a 10w as it will flow better from cold.

The Castrol Magnatec is sold as a synthetic but it is infact a hydrocracked mineral oil (the better half of a semi synthetic!). We tend to recommend and find most popular the true synthetic 5w-40 oils, these of course cost more but then they are better. Popular at the moment is the Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300v, Redline and Gulf Comp - you can find them here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-953-ester-synthetic.as...

Edge is PAO synthetic, but not ester based.

So the Castrol 10W/60 fully synthetic in my WRX PPP (non tracked) is prob overkill?

(But at the same price as 3/4 tank of fuel it's not a problem cost wise).

It'll run just as well with semi synth. If you don't mind the extra costs of the fully synth, stick with it.

always use the thinest oil the manufacturer recommends on a standard or slighty modded road car (especially in winter), dont quote me but on impreza's im guessing thats gunna be a something like a fully synthetic 5w/40. heavily modded or track cars are a different ball-game and your better off asking a tuner for their advice.
