Hello people, looking to get a cambelt service for an 05 plate STI ppp, subaru dealers have quoted me around £450, was wandering is it a better idea to go to a specialist like roger clark, or to bite the bullet and go dealers. also is it important to get the tensioner done also. cheers

For my WRX I made sure I had main dealer stamps to 30,000 miles (with intermediate oil/filter changes as well) for resale vaue - then non franchised specialist. Qulaity prob even better, and quite a decent saving:

Roger Clark will probably do a far better job than the subaru garage, I use specialists for servicing my WRX.

I wouldn't touch a Subaru main dealer with a barge pole mate, the last one I used (and this was some years ago now) couldn't even manage to do an oil change properly!

Independents all the way.

I'm sure RCM will do a good job, don't bother emailing them though....they don't reply. rolleyes

RCM are really good they have great service, the only thing that concerns me is the resale element, also i have a motorplan warranty, so dont know if using RCM would invalidate the warranty, does anyone have experience with this warranty btw.

If you have a Proven warranty, ring them and ask if it's okay to use an indy specialist. There are some cracking Subaru main agents, there are also some crap ones. My local main agent does the whole 50K service including the belt and tensioner for £470. It look like it may be going up slightly when the VAT goes back to 17.5% though.

It's european law, also applicable in the UK, that an independent garage can do your servicing so long as they are doing it to the manufacturers spec using OEM or equivalent parts. Equivalent parts being parts that have gone through an approval process and marked as so.

This allows non manufacturer franchised dealerships and garages to carry out servicing and mechanical work without invalidating the OEM warranty.

To have an RCM stamp in your service book is a sure way to help sell your car come resale time.

Cheers for that, just another quick question for you guys, my sti has 37000 on the clock but is almost five years old, so does it really need a cambelt change due to the time period not Necessarily the mileage, i had the 40k service dont at around 32000, cheers

It's the same with all manufacturers. Even if you only did 3000 miles a year and you've had the car 5yrs it still gets a 5th year service regardless.

My partners MY07 S Type diesel has just over 30K miles on the clock. We've only had it since Feb this year when it had 6500miles on the clock but it had 2 services done already when we bought it at 2yrs old. We've just had a 45K miles service (3yr service) done even though it's only 2.5yrs old and covered only 30K miles.

That's the way they do it.

I tend to pay more attention to the mileage when it comes to servicing but I guess what I'm trying to say Is will my cambelt snap off now that it's been five years or will it be ok for a while, cheers

OEM cam belts will crack over time as the rubber it's made from starts to dry out and loses it's ability to retain conformity under use. They do also wear out over the 50K miles lifetime before change. They are meant to be changed every 50K miles or 5yrs as service intervals are yearly or 10K miles. Regardless of age, and even if the car was only 2yrs old but had done 50K miles it needs to be changed. At 5yrs and only 37K miles it still needs to be changed.

Better that than a snapped belt which leads to bent valves, large dents or holes in your piston and bits of broken piston and valve entering your engine and buggering up other internal bits and possibly very small bits of metal finding their way to the exhaust inlet side of your turbo and buggering that as well.

When it fails it all comes to a stop very quickly but runs for long enough to do some serious damage.

Get it changed if it's due!!

I had a cambelt service at a subaru dealer around the same time a mate did with a indy..

Both of our Cambelt tensioners needed replacing... Both cars under Used warrenty

Indy Cambelt service was £420. Plus £130 for cambelt tensioner Total £550 Ex MOT
Main Dealer Service was £420. Cambelt Tensioner repalced under warrenty. Total £420. Inc MOT

It all depends on the dealer you have local to you and if you have a good relationship with them..

I had my Car for 70k miles, and all services were done at the main dealer. I had no issues with there workmanship.. I had one issue where the idiot who was cleaning the ars scratch my bonnet. But this was repaired Free of charge

I had a service plus cam belt change last year for £356 by Slowboy Racing in Forest Hill. Very happy with that. Used a Gates cam belt rather than a Subaru one.

My blobeye WRX needs a new cam belt soon.

Was thinking of ringing Power Engineering in Uxbridge.

Anybody had any experiences with them good or bad ??

Also is it recommended to to have anything else replaced at the same time eg. Water pump, which I'm assuming is driven off this belt ??
