OK, my Dad seems to be having a mid-life crisis and has decided on a 'sportscar' to go travelling around Europe in summertime with my Mom.
(B&B, hotels around France, Germany, Switzerland etc.)

His budget is very definitely no more than £1,500....yes, I know, the options from this point are limited!

Was wanting to ask, how reliable would a sub £1,500 MX5 be for such a planned european holiday?

Oh it'll be fine. Assuming he doesn't buy a total dog. However does the wife really want to spend a few weeks covering lots of miles in an MX5. It's a sports car. Not a grand tourer.

Sorry - is he thinking of becoming a hairdresser too?

For £1,500 he should be limiting his choice to the Mk1 '89 to '93 model, 1.6L ?

Thanks.

His other 'car' is a Discovery, which they previously went around europe in...so I guess an MX5 would be a step up in comfort compared to this.

I'm just going through the owners website for useful info at the moment. But any more info on here is much appreciated.

To be honest it's like any car. You could buy o e and have no problem but you could also end up with loads of issues even if it appeared in fantastic cndition when purchased. £1500 is not a huge sum of money and you'll be looking at an older car, which means wheel bearings, brakes, clutch, suspension and even rust are all real world potential issues.

It might be worth looking at some other cars too so they can get a flavour of what else is on offer at this price range. Something like a Honda del sol crx might be worth a butchers or even an MGF. You'll buy more and newer F for your money. Although you still need to buy on condition.

1) A CRX (especially a del sol) is NOT a sportscar.
2) Personally I'd expect an MX5 to be significantly more reliable and cheaper to fix than an MGF, but that is just based on hearsay and internet reputations rather than personal experience.

I think this could spark a debate on what is a sports car. The del sol however is a small 2 seat roadster with more sporty handling than your average hatch or saloon. Ok I admit it's fwd but so are a lot of cars.

So I agree it isn't going to offer the same thrills as a rwd mx5. But at this price range you'll probably get a slightly newer and in the case of the VTI model aot faster car than an mx5. And for intensive purposes will still offer the same open air, wind in the hair thrills. And arguably may be more comfy for a European road trip.

MGF. In the UK I would think MGF parts are generally cheaper than Mazda. But the main difference is £1500 will buy you quite a bit newer F than 5.

Well, he hasn't hung around. He gone and bought a sedate Mk1 MX5.
Looks to be in good condition and drives well.

I've got a 1990 MX-5, has NEVER let me down, it just keeps on going. Took it over to Europe this summer, 2500 miles over days and it was great. There was a slight lack of room and we had to get our mates to take some of the camping gear, but if he's staying in hotels etc it'll be fine.

Was fantastic to be able to get up in the alps and flip the hood down, you can't believe the difference on those amazing views untill the hood is down, tell him to just do it, he won't regret it.

Edited again for accuracy.

Although the rule for using "an" is with vowels, it's the sound of the first letter that is the key, so M, "em", is a vowel sound, so it's an.

Cheers people.

Seeing as he has now gone and bought it....anybody know where an owners handbook can be downloaded from? (mk1 1.6 model)
