I had the auxiliary belts changed on my 350Z very recently and they've started squealing (really really loud) in the recent cold weather, after driving for 5 mins they stop - it is worse when the air-con is on.

They obviously need tensioning properly (I know how to do it but it involves ramps) and I intend to do it but I don't have the time for about another week, I need my car.

I have a couple of questions.

1. Is there an easy fix to stop it squealing before I take it back to the garage/have a look myself? I've heard of talcum powder and WD40 but some people strongly advise against this... Would this be ok?

2. Will it be a problem, is the squealing an indication that it could fly off at any moment?

Any advice is appreciated!!

It could be because your battery power is low. The alternator is trying to shove more power in it and work harder. It stops doing it after the battery has charged up a bit. It is the alternator belt that is squealing.

I had that problem on skyline after having all the belts changed during a service. After a few running in miles the belts strectch a little, they just need tightening up with abit more tension put on them. Think it's done by moving the alternator abit further out on it's bracket. Well it is on the RB engine.

from my experiance before replacing anything try spraying a silicone lubricate on it. don't use anything oil based as this can damage the belt.
