Hi guys,

I have recently replaced my Mum's car speakers in her MR2 mk3 hoping to boost the sound quality a bit. After speaking to our local car audio shop which seems to have excellent knowledgeable staff we got some Vibe black air components. They were on sale for £59 from £70, £70 being what we were looking at roughly spending. Now I don't know much about Vibe speakers and they look a bit partyboyish to me but they came highly recommended by the staff, one of which was was using them in their own car. The problem is, they barely sound any better than the stock speakers. Lots of clear treble but lacking in oomph basically. They are running through the headunit (an Alpine iXDA100)and I was wondering if amping them would help or is the mr2 just not a great car for sound?

Thanks,

John

My wifes MR2 Mk3 had a sub strapped into the storage space behind the passenger seat when we bought it - sounds good and deep with lots of oomph! Not sure how much the guys at your local audio shop would charge to fit such a sub - but if you are interested I will have a closer look and let you know exactly what we have.

For the record we have a Pioneer TS-WX22A, 20 cm powered subwoofer system with a separate gain and frequency control.

Thanks Mr Loto but looks like we have resolved our issue! We took the awful Vibe Blackair 6s out and replaced them with some infinity reference 6.5" components. Night and day! Obviously the vibes are A) of a poor quality, B) massively biased towards power and therefore need and amp or my guess, a bit of both. I had some infinity Co-ax speakers up until very recently in my car and they were great in that too. We do have an amp at home but since the speakers are so much better we aren't sure if we need it.

Anyways if anyone wants some good speakers to run off a head unit alone, then get some Infinitys as they are really great. Avoid Vibes!
