Have you become a member of the MLR mate?
I was in the same place as you 3 months ago and from a personal point of view I prefer 7s as I don't like the front end of the 8 and if you notice the 9 looks a lot like the 7s.
From a model point of view I was told the 6 speed boxes in the 8s were made out of fudge.
I looked for the best 7 I could find and after many months of looking I got a silver (not my first choice) FQ300 with 22k on it and every stamp in the book upto 42,500 miles. Lots and lots of reciepts etc.
Also if you get a 7 with new front and rear bumpers plus an odd few buts you've got a 9 and only experts could tell (clearly you'd have to put a non age related plate on).

Get a VI, as I understand it they've got the best power/weight ratio from standard...

... Plus I just prefer their look. Less like an Automotive Megatron and more like a Rally Champ.

Depends which looks you prefer and If/What you/'re willing to spend on them...

Would it really matter?

It's not as if there is a revolutionary difference between the two. I'd have a drive of both, or a couple of each and see which you prefer and if you can see/tell a difference.

I think it just comes down to your personal preference.

For me it was the look of the 8 and the interior of the MR, so I opted for that.

I'm biased, and would say get a 6. wink

But on a serious note, I'd take a 8 over a 7, the 7 has the squarer front end, and 8 looks more like a 9.
The 7 has the same 5spd Gearbox as the 5/6, which is abit short, but only noticable for motorway cruising as its up near 4k @ 80ish. The 8's generally come with the 6spd Gearbox, so are a little better suited to the motorway, and also come with a slightly bigger fuel tank. You do notice this when combined MPG on my 6 is around 21mpg! The tiny 50ltr tank isnt enough, and 10ltrs of that is the reserve... which you go into at your own peril!

But if you've got 12-13k to spend, get a 6 TME...

Not sure which 8s you've looked at but the 7 looks more like the 9 and as for the gearboxes I was told that, although the 7 is still a 5 speed, it is longer than the 6 plus the 6 speed boxes from 8s are prone to going bang.

My 7 sits very nicely on the motorway.

Hi, do you intend to modify it.....I suspect you will do so, even if you don't intend to when you buy.

I have a modified '03 plate 8, about 350 brake, 30k miles, only thing it's had other than routine servicing are front brake discs because the originals warped ( AP's on from 8k, much better ). The boxes aren't as strong as the 5 speed, and even a good 6 speed has a pretty crap change. Describing them as fudge doesn't describe my experience though. AYC pump is a possible problem area, occasionally top mounts, but I haven't had either of these personally. Generally Evos of all vintages are extremely strong and reliable if looked after, and not over modified. Can't think of anything better for the money, and we've had some nice stuff.

Hope this helps, cheers, Andy.

Considering the only real difference between an VIII and a IX externally are the front and rear bumpers I don't know where you're coming from.. where as with the VII it's front and rear bumpers, bonnet, grille, rear lights, and boot spoiler lol.

IMHO having driven both, and i use my VIII as a daily driver, the 6 speed unit in the VIII is a much nicer unit, and a lot more pleasant on the motorway.

I was told - 7s are a 50% stiffer body-shell. I personally prefer the looks of the 6, but TBH I want go not show. After speaking to a lot of people who race and rally them, the consensus was a VIIRS, as it's a much tougher car than the standard, will take good power on stock internals - although later 9s are good for 360 apparently, and is a much purer drive. Read EVOs review of the VIIRS Sprint. If you can find one running on EXE dampers then it would be ideal - again the consensus is these are by far the best.

I was supposed to pic up my VIIRS today but the bloody money didn't clear in time. I'll let you know how I get on with it.

Give Barrie a call at DCY in york, they have another VII RS due in soon, with the rare Brembos and AC factory fit.

Alot more differences than that!

I had an EVO 8 for 3 years brilliant car, wouldnt touch a 7.

Best thing is to join MLR lots of info though alot of guys who know there stuff are disapearing, but lots of info in search engine!

If you have cash buy a 9 mate FQ300 spend just over a grand and have a nice 400/400 cat great on motorway or fast b road driving
