The time is approaching; my faithful old '99 Impreza wagon may have to go. She has served me well and I have had her since she was 4 years old and nothing except wear and tear and a MAF have gone wrong.

I would ideally like a 2.0D for obvious reasons but cannot stretch the budget anywhere near that so have decided perhaps the 2.0 petrol will be ok?

Not massively bothered by outright speed but want something that will deliver half decent fuel economy, how do these fair in the real world?

I am after improved economy over Impreza, better built therefore safer. Also quieter and more comfortable for the long journeys.

Do you know, is it the 165bhp version or the previous 135?
I think officially it should average about 32mpg for the 165bhp. I have a 2005 2.5 manual, which funnily enough according to Subaru is more economical than the 2.0 165bhp at 34mpg. I am actually averaging about 32-33 mpg on my daily commute, which is mainly A\B roads. On a long motorway run it averages 36-38mpg.

The 2.5 ( manual) in my case, i find is extremely refined, although it still has some of that distinctive boxer noise. It's very comfy and relaxing to drive, and feels decently quick when you need it. Overall its a fabulous car, and great value for money used.

thanks for this, interesting that the 2.5 is more efficient...what is the road tax?

The 2.5 is slightly more efficient as the 2.0 strains a bit. My 2.0 averages 27-28 overall but that includes mostly school run and town driving by my wife during the week. I give it a good run on weekends. Motorways will average 33-35 and normal driving will be any where between the 28 - 33mpg depending on how you drive. Very refined, planted, solid drive though. Would love a Spec-B but the economy scares me not to mention the £435 car tax from April!

As Cailean says, the 2.0 needs to be revved a bit more to extract the performance, whereas the 2.5 is a bit more torquey and relaxed.
The tax on my 2005 model is i think £205 pa.

The 2.5 are not that common though, especially in manual form ( which i wanted, the auto felt much slower), so you may have to be patient.
