Impreza Heater Problem - Too Hot!
Discussion
So tried a few of the usual places to get help but no joy, maybe a PHer has the answer!
I recently changed the header tank on my 94 import V1 STi to the later model metal tank as my plastic one leaked. Since then the heater in car has an issue with matching the heater output to the dial position.
On the coldest position it blows in cold-ish air, I guess just outside ambient temp, which is fine. Just one click away from the coldest setting blows hot and every click there after is the same hot temp regardless of position, basically there is no linear increase of heat matching dial position.
If left in the cold section for around 20 minutes it eventually cools down. Odd. Move it again 1 click hotter and back to square one, 15-20 minutes later, its at the right temp. If I put on the aircon it blows very cold on the coldest setting and hot on every other position.
So anyone got any ideas?
Cheers. Tom

There is (normally) a damper/baffle that directs the heat from the matrix to the inside of the car, it sounds like yours is sticking on hot.
Not sure what the fix would be on your impreza, some cars have ones that are operated by vacumm, check you never dislodged any pipes when fitting the new header tank.

Ok guys, both good points....
So 1) How do I "reverse" flush the system? This sounds the easiest place to start...
2) Is this stuck behind the dash? I think I saw a post by someone who replaced the matrix on a classic....it made me want to cry as the entire dash had to be removed, literally everything... it looked hellish!
Cheers for the ideas though...

Yes Dash out.....and then when you see what's behind there......you'll start to weep uncontrolably....to the point someone finds you in a heap on the floor mistaking you for a wounded animal in pain and shoots you
No it's not that bad....;)
Reverse flushing just means that you pop the rad off, shove a hose in the top water entry of the engine and flush until water starts coming through the bottom of the block, and vice versa. Make sure the heater is set to fully hot. If there is anything in there it will present itself. Prior to rad removal I would recommend you fill the rad with radflush and run the car around for a bit whilst messing with the heater, hot and then cold and vice versa, just in case there is a lot of sludge in there.

Imagine my surprise at the weekend when I drove down to my folks and the car had magically repaired itself! After annoying me for a few months (Idon't get to drive it much) it just started working again... if only everything in life was that easy. Must have been some crap in the system that stuck something open.
