First things first - It's either a GTO or a 3000GT, no such thing as a gt3000!
Unfortunately the only places I would trust are down south - Eurospec in Guildford and Sumiyaka in Cornwall. These are complicated cars and I would think very hard about taking it to anywhere without any experience of them.
I would recommend joining GTOUK and asking if any of the owners near to you would come out and have a look. Most people who own these cars become a mechanic to some degree and they are often the best people to cast their eye over to see if anything is amiss.
If you are mechanically minded get hold of the manual CD and have a go at servicing and working on it yourself. They aren't too bad to work on once you get to know your way around.
Hope this helps

I'd echo the above, Mark. There aren't many owners of these cars on PH but GTOUK has members all over the UK.
I use Eurospec almost exclusively but I'm lucky to live about 15 miles from them.
You may well have bought the car for only a few grand but 20 years ago they cost over £35,000 new. Ten years ago the last of them cost about £45,000. Some bits are as easy to work on as most other cars; some aren't. Point is, if something needs doing get it done. Replacement engines and gearboxes are getting like hens' teeth. Regular servicing and maintenance may be a little expensive (unless you're a fair mechanic yourself) but the cost of major breakages will bring tears to your wallet.
In the meantime, enjoy the ride and the looks you'll get on the street.

i didnt have the luxury of living close to a garage that had experience of these cars when i got my gto a while back. i took mine to a guy i had used for years but had never worked on a gto. he gave the car a thorough going over, car didnt come with any service history as hadnt been in country long so he did all the usual stuff - plugs/leads, fuel filter, cambelt, idlers/tensioner/water pump. had the car 2years and apart from the usual brakes/tyres to replace the only problem i had with it was a misfire which was caused by a faulty ecu, less than 200 nicker to repair so i was well happy. some people slate these cars but i thoroughly enjoyed mine
